“Home-grown compost is the engine of my garden,” says Jude whose been firing up the compost to boost food productivity at home. One of the cheapest ways to grow vegies is by seed, which means you need to know how to look after seedlings. As baby plants, seedlings are vulnerable to changes in the weather and need consistent care. “If they dry out even once you can lose them real quick” says Jude who suggests the following tips to ensure seedling success.
1. Start with good-quality seed-raising mix. The fine particles in the mix will help it make direct contact with the seed. It’s designed to hold moisture and air, and drains well, which is what little seeds need.
2. Fill a punnet with seed raising mix leaving about 1cm from the top, and water it in to settle.
3. Sow the seeds about twice as deep as their size. Jude sows a variety of lettuce called Mignonette.
4. On top of the seed, sprinkle a layer of seed-raising mix or vermiculite. Vermiculite is incredibly porous, so it holds moisture and air and is very light weight. Many varieties of lettuce need sunlight to germinate, and vermiculite helps with that, too.
5. Firm it down gently using the base of another punnet and then water in.
6. Keep seeds humid. You can place this punnet on a tray of damp sand which may help to keep the humidity up. If you don’t have a greenhouse like Jude’s (yet!), you can repurpose a plastic container as a hothouse, just make sure it’s see-through and can be propped up for air flow.
In about a week or so they’ll start to germinate, and when they get a bit bigger, they can be planted out into the vegie patch. Jude says, “as I’ve been growing on my gardening journey, I found it’s the little things that make a big difference!”
We’re sure that’s planted some seeds of inspiration for you. Good luck in your garden!
