How and when is the best way and time to harvest vegetables? Gardener Scott discusses tips for harvesting vegetable crops, answers viewer questions, shares gardening philosophy, and much more.
⚠️ PLEASE READ THE LIVESTREAM GUIDANCE HERE: ⚠️
⚠️ How it works: As I see questions, I’ll do my best to answer in the order they appear. However, if someone gives a “super chat” or “super sticker” with a question, their question becomes a priority and moves to the front of the queue. Channel members will also receive priority.
⚠️ Because I have a limited amount of time, if I miss a super chat question this week, it will be answered at the beginning of my next livestream next week.
⚠️ Your super chat/sticker is a donation that I appreciate very much.
⚠️ If you put ”@GARDENER SCOTT” at the beginning of your question, it will be easier for me to see.
⚠️⚠️ I’m answering YouTube questions to give actionable tips you can use to become a better gardener. While I have many years of gardening experience and training, please understand that every garden is different and my suggestions may not be the best action for your garden. I encourage you get information from other sources too.
Thanks for your understanding and support!

Greetings from Stoughton, Wisconsin
I’m continually picking beans when they’re younger, just to get more from the plants, the more you pick, the more you get. If you allow the beans to mature too much, they’ll slow down or stop production because the plant figures that it has succeeded in reproduction, no need to keep on producing. Lol!
It’s been EXTREMELY Dry and hot with cold spells. Plants don’t like it. I’m tired of watering and the plants want rain water not well water. No rain for a month unless you count drops. We have harvested rhubarb, strawberries and asparagus. I covered peppers and tomatoes last night as they said 45*F but with N wind I wasn’t trusting it AGAIN as we had a frost that wiped out many plants b4 Memorial Day. No warning then either. We had 40*F this morning, only reached 59* yesterday and they called for 65*F. Cool for a couple days and back into sweltering heat for ending spring. Only good thing is we have chances of rain coming through to Monday.
The tomatoes and peppers are all different sizes as some survived the frost and many replanted.
El Niño started months earlier this year and they expect a record heat year in 2024. Get ready. And you should hope it doesn’t quit raining in CO as you need to fill up those reservoirs.
It’s been Very trying year and hopefully we will get some production. Z5a, WI.
Have to go fold up frost cloths now as ‘they’ said 50s at night. 😏we’ll see.
Yep, plants died because of record multiple deluges capped off by hail storm. Went and pulled dead plants, drained saucers, etc.
Yep, plants are dying because it is now too hot and dry….watering from the rain barrel and other catchment buckets…. IDK which way I will be moving water from day to day. Almost ready to hit the "covercrop" button and break for the summer (all except for my perennials and fruit trees/shrubs).
Hello from the foggy southern coast of Oregon.
Hey from AR!
Oh Dear I cant believe you are having such cold weather we hardly have had any rain. The soil is boiling hot, peppers, tomatoes and beans are in and growing. Sweet corn is 5" tall. Here in zone 3 SW of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.
Having said that we did have 3 days of cold Sayurday June 10th it was -1.6°C and I was scrambling with water cans sprinkling the tomatoes and pepper plants and even corn. Lost none!!!!❤
It was cold Sunday and today it is very hot and dry.
I am holding off for the Sugar Baby seedlings and the Cantelopes that are short season to maturity.
I sure hope thi ts improve for you. Oh my peppers are starting to bloom.
Sorry I missed the live show. Rewatching!
Don’t let your cucs get any longer than 9 inches. They start getting bitter larger than that, plus the center part of the flesh starts to soften, with larger forming seeds. Pickles usually 2-4”
Harvest vegetables? Hmm , still trying to get planted here in Central Alaska.
Nesting birds, if you put out food for them away from where you usually go, the adults will rarely come after you.
If you can see, or figure out, where the nest/s are, just stay back from the area if possible. A birdbath is another thing to put in some places away from your activity area.
Birds won't dive at people unless we get too close.
Remember some birds have nests in bushes or on the ground. Not all nests are up in trees.
Hello Gardener Scott everyone it’s replay time😀🇦🇺
