👩🏻🦰 A B O U T M E:
Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are YouTube, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s YouTube channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her YouTube channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

What book do u recommend to understand gardening?
Great information here Ashley. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes. Jason from Melbourne Australia.
This video was so helpful. I made two raised garden beds last year (after container gardening with nice potting soil for a couple years) filled the beds with half top soil half compost and used chemical fertilizer a couple of times and couldn't ever stand why everything was so SAD. I was considering just going back to pots but i feel a lot more encouraged to keep going!
Thank you for this little talk, I really needed this. This is my first year growing anything and I am feeling a like my garden is going to be to small with what seeds have survived so far this year, it does not help that my garden is going in next to a long term gardener (I wish this could be a resource for me, but it is not). I go back and forth telling myself that I need more plants and telling myself to start small this is a learning year. You have confirmed for me that I should start small and be happy with whatever success and knowledge that I gain.
Absolutely! Take your time with a new garden. We all have set backs so try a few things incase one thing fails. Observe your garden! And if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the amount of advice just try something and don’t worry too much about it. You’ll end up learning a lot from the experience.
You can do it!
Great video! Bareroots IMO are always a crap shoot. Some arrive with good root systems and take well. The biggest challenge I've faced is trying to get a bareroot with a pathetic root system established. Seems like they all develop deficiencies no matter what. Some vendors will ship anything without any QC it seems like. My two cents, always buy from a reputable, quality vendor. Otherwise you might spend an entire year trying to establish a root system and hoping for the best. If you've done a video on different rootstocks please let me know.
That hat makes you look like a camp councilor.
Not a criticism 🙂
I have the same wood slatted composter as you, but i set mine up as a planter instead.
Great advice! One thing I would add, as soon as you know you like gardening start composting immediately. Even if its just a pile in an out of the way place, or in an old garbage can.
I know starting small worked for me, so good advice there. I started out on the patio in containers, after 3 expansions its at 20'x100'. Its at the maximum allowable space according to my wife, she wants some lawn for the dogs. Otherwise the backyard would slowly turn into 100% garden.
I needed to hear this today!!! THANK YOU!!! I know this hobby/lifestyle/self sustainability takes patience….. but I've already got myself in over my head with project plans…..I've been watching my grow space for almost 2 years in Montana (planting a few things here and there) this was encouraging and totally relatable
Great advice. This will be my 3rd year gardening, 2nd year in raised beds. I’ve been getting good results but things could be different this year. Regardless I’ll learn something new and keep trying. That’s part of the fun! 😊
About building up microfauna… I’ve seen some market farmers spraying aerated compost/vermicompost tea in new beds. Would that help speed things up?
No idea what I'm doing but I'm trying to grow my first garden. I grow the seeds inside and transfer them in the small green house when I think they will survive..no idea how long they should stay in the green house..I water in the morning don't know why..I try to look at video on hard to grow stuff and there is too much info that I just try and see..if it fails I try again or research..everything is in pot..
How long is your season if your last frost date is June 10?
So great to see you outside in your garden!
I truly appreciated this video on several fronts. Can't express how satisfying it is for your sharing of such fundamental yet often overlooked elements off basic gardening. Super job you did of bringing us back to Mother Earth.
All very good points for both new and seasoned gardeners, I am definitely a new gardener. Another point I have had to learn is not to get discouraged when things go bad. This year alone I had to deal with 4 disasters, but I learned in the process and made me, I think a better gardener.
Guided a couple people to your channel for LAB info.
Stay Well!!!
Going into 4th year with most of my garden beds. It's nice to hear that my efforts at improving the soil over the past 3 years should start paying off!
Recwnt subscriber, been really enjoying your channel. Im an excavator of 18 years, so I quite enjoy the soil science a fair bit.
You’re a great trusted resource with your scientific expertise….appreciate this😊
I definitely had to till in organic matter in my clay soil in the first year.
Great tips I totally agree
I am an old gardener in a new garden. This video totally speaks to me!
You are sharing wisdom as well as knowledge and I love it.
Two years ago I started from absolute scratch, just pure sand.
Not even sandy soil, just sand. Fortunately I could import excellent topsoil.
At first I thought I should have it all together the first year, at most two,
because at 80 I do not have enough years left to be patient.
What was I thinking. Back to pretending we have endless time and enjoying the process.
Thanks for all you do.
Hello I'm a first buyer of apple trees and I have sandy soil and I mean sandy. I was told to amend the soil but what do you suggest and how big and how hollow should it be thank you so much
Found your channel early 2020 and so glad I did…I’ve learned so much from watching your content!
I love your hat! Where can I get one like it?
