It is hot and dry here in Talladega Alabama, so I am having to water daily, some plants twice a day. Spinosad is taking care of the pickleworm problem, so I am harvesting squash and cucumbers nearly every day. My slicer tomatoes and peppers are starting to flower, and my Super Sweet cherry tomato plants are starting to produce ripe fruit. I have about three Swiss Chard plants left in the raised bed that I will be harvesting out in the next few days, leaving assorted herbs, Yod Fah, summer and winter squash, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, New Zealand Spinach, Seascape Strawberries, New Zealand Spinach (It loves the heat!), Russian Scarlet Kale, zinnias, and marigolds for my summer garden. I'm in the process of planning my fall garden, and will start sowing seeds for Danvers, Navone Gold Rutabagas, Purple Top Turnips, and Tokinashi Turnips, next month.
I do mostly container gardening. My mix is 3 parts peat, 3 parts compost and 1 part perlite. I've heard that the peat will break down and make my soil acidic. Is it a good idea to mix in lime before planting. I have experienced stunted growth with my tomato plants. I fertilize regularly so I'm wondering if the ph level is the problem. I use a ph testing probe but i think my alkaline water gives me inaccurate readings. Testing regularly shows high ph.
