Pictured: “Old wood” hydrangeas bloom on old wood and form their flower buds in late summer, take a rest for winter, and then open their buds the following summer (almost a year after they were formed).

Bigleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) bloom on old wood. If your winter is too cold or you prune them anytime after late summer, they won’t bloom the following year. But treat them right, and they’ll reward you with loads of lush blossoms. Many different shrubs bloom on old wood including lilacs, forsythias, viburnums and rhododendrons.
