Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

Thanks for the video! Good to see Papa T again
Very niceee raise beds
Can’t wait to see those beds in a month or two! Please do update if you can!
So sweet!!!❤❤❤❤
Jess, you hit the nail on the head today translating your gardens to a more "personal" and doable size for some of us. ❤️👍Just reading other comments show that video this is just what the "doctor ordered"! (That used to be a good thing to say…is it still???🤔) I look forward to seeing updates as the garden progresses. 😊
Awwww love this. Team work! Miah is so funny.
I have been doing the egg trick every since I heard you talking about it. Last year, I did one row of tomatoes with egg in a hole and another row with no egg. What a difference – not only in the size of plants and how much they produced.
Bear does not want to be left out. It is funny that he learned to open the door. I used to have a cat that figured out how to open the front door.
Loved this video and will love an update! Bless you
This is so stinking cool. Blessings.
Papa T is adorable and I love that y’all are helping them get their garden going! So sweet 🥹
I bet PapaT is deLIGHTED to have you for neighbors building such nice raised beds with hardscaping and planting the garden to boot for him like that. I know I would be.
Incredibly aesthetically beautiful raised beds Papa T! Functionality is just the gravy lol.
Loved seeing how much can be grown in a small space! Very encouraging!
I’ve been working in my gardens this morning, making things pretty and watering and harvesting beautiful strawberries. What a sweet video to watch during a break. Being neighborly and sharing stories and plants – it’s a lovely way to live.
Absolutely loved this video. So great being able to help out your neighbor. He is going to have a great amount of food from the Miah gardens.
I wonder how many of us tried our best to see the name of the compost Joes used when she was loading it up on the utv? Lol I know she says mater maker but I figure that’s a southern thing. We have our own language for sure. Happy gardening everyone. 👩🌾💚🥬🥒🍓♥️🧄🌹
What a gift it is to have a good relationship with your neighbors!
i heard the eggs bring in the beneficial microbes
It’s so nice to have neighbors that live like you do . And it’s great for them cuz you can do what you like best…. Teach & grow 🤩🤩. 👵🏻👩🌾❣️
Hi Roots and Refuge Homestead.😊
I did an egg in the hole test for the first time this year…It totally worked. Thank you for the tip. 😊
I am learning and trying electra culture as well
Mimi and Papa T's garden now has almost the exact same slicer tomato lineup as my garden. 🍅 Except I have an 'Ananas Noire' (aka Black Pineapple) to pair with my all-time favorite 'Pineapple' instead of the 'Abe Lincoln', but the others are all the same. 'Cherokee Purple' and 'Paul Robeson'
I think it's great you helping out your neighbor like this.
So is this a southern expression, where plural squash becomes 'squashes'? Isn't it just still squash like fish is still just fish, whether it's singular OR PLURAL?
Absolutely this was a game changer video for me ! I am excited again about how I can put raised beds near the house as this spring I put my big garden to bed (too much for me alone) but this has really encouraged me and I can’t wait to get started again.
Very grateful to get updates on their garden! Thank you as ALWAYS ❤️❤️❤️
Awesome neighbor!
Jess what kind of dirt is the matter maker recipe?..Patricia
Multiplying your blessings. ❤
Those garden beds look just like yours. What a blessing yall are to your neighbors ❤love thy neighbor amen!
Your hard work and dedication to your channel shows. 👍
Great use for those unhatched/rotten eggs. Wherever you bury them, plant something on top, even if it’s flowers or trees 👨🌾
Love the small space. I can see it now full of food. It is nice to see it done in a small area. I love your huge garden, but nice to see a smaller scale.
This dress! 😍😍 anybody know who made it??
What a blessing, having neighbors like Mimi and Papa T! Makes me smile, and I look forward to a mini garden tour soon!
You should let Bear ride along with you ❤. He’s so sweet .😊
❤
Papa T is adorable. What lovely neighbours you have. Cheeky Bear. X
I tried with just egg shells in the hole because the raccoons took out a few of my plants to get the eggs – so I ended up with a side by side comparison of some with eggs and some with just the shells and they seemed to be very similar results. I wonder if the calcium leaches from the shells before it’s actually all the way broken down.
Watch your iPhone 16.5 update!!! It has pride flag crap on it!!! Set auto update to off!!!
Never disappoint, great show
This video right here, with you putting holes and saying which plant, how many and what else goes good with it has been the biggest help. This quick garden makeup was so well thought and so fast, I struggle for months making these decisions.
💖💝💖
I grew up like Pappa T, sugar, flour, coffee, salt, pepper, were bought. All the veggies and meat came directly from raising it ourselves. Christmas was special because we got a box of mandarin oranges and during the rest of the year we would sometimes have store bought bananas. My mom and the rural ladies did tons of canning so there was always something to make a meal out of. Those were hard working days but what sweet memories I have from having had the opportunity to grow up in that era on a farm.
That’s so sweet of you, planting for the neighbor. You’re super sweet and thats how you build a community. Love watching your channel, you’re so inspirational. God bless you and your family. ❤
Lol. My word. Are you sure that's 'his' garden? Also. "Small garden"?? Does he know how much harvest is coming?
I love you got the men planting!
not related to this video, but I made basil lemonade OMG, so good we love it 😊
We are definitely going to need a monthly update on this garden. ❤❤
I like Jess’ “hand shovel”… she just uses her hand as a shovel! 😂
My dad always added broken up sheet rock every Fall to our garden, along with the leaves from our yard. He would rototill them in , cover in straw and leave until the snow melted in the Spring, rototill again after adding composted steer manure. We did in ground planting. Here I can't afford raised beds, so I amend the soil with whatever I can afford. So far, so good.
Love that you helped your neighbor
