I frequently pot directly from milk jugs to gallon containers but leave them in bunches of 3-5 plants. Once they start drying out quickly I’ll split them into one plant/container. Though this is mostly because I have a million gallon pots and a limited supply of 3&4 inch pots.
I’ve found that going directly to one small plant per large container stunts their growth, probably because they can’t use all the water in the soil fast enough and end up soggy.
