Am I supposed to prune the top of the new cane to encourage more to grow? Or prune in any other way? Right now I just have one massive (probably 10’+ tall) primocane that just keeps getting bigger.

Same thing happend last year. So I only have a single producing floricane for this plant. Whereas the new (second) one I bought had multiple much smaller and thinner canes.

Apache blackberries and I’m in zone 9a if that matters.

I have the same situation & was going to ask the same question earlier today. I got too busy & & forgot to post.

Different cultivars have different growth habits and pruning recommendations. Do you know what this is?

Blackberries typically don’t develop on a cane until it is 2 years old. If you prune the main stem back, you’ll be removing the cane that can produce berries, and any new canes won’t produce berries for 2 years.

Use supports or a trellis, and wait a few seasons to start pruning. Blackberries are prolific, you won’t need to encourage new stems to grow. Enjoy!

I’m growing 2 Apaches without support in a Permaculture style system. How long should I let the cane(s) grow before tipping?
