Been munching on delicious BERRIES all week, and now it’s CHERRY time! How to know if they’re ripe? Do I need to net my trees? What can I make with Mulberries? (Hint: So Many Scrumptious Things!)
Hi, folks – I’m Kim. Welcome to Olive City Permaculture, my 2.5 acre Zone 9B property here in beautiful northern California!
I was completely knocked out by a severe flu/migraine for ten days, so my gardens and orchards were neglected almost entirely. I did manage to drag myself outside to water the new seedlings to keep them alive, but that’s about it. Amazingly, everything I really care about has survived! Plus, my garden welcomed me back with an abundance of berries!!! Since I hadn’t eaten food in more than a week, the berries provided a nice, gentle reintroduction to the world of solid food.
If I sound a little muted and low-energy in this video, you now know why, but I’m making progress every day and hope to be back to full strength before too long. Thanks for your well wishes!

I’m dealing with rheumatoid arthritis, cervical disc degeneration, IBS, and other health challenges. However, none of that will stop me from pursuing my dream of living a simple life as I create and enjoy my peaceful and productive perennial garden and orchard.
On my channel, I like to emphasize easy gardening anyone can do, simple living garden ideas, and self-care through nature because I believe these things are very important to our physical and emotional well-being. My permaculture mindset has me constantly planting more perennial plants, and my fruit and nut orchard is continually growing, too!
Experimenting in the garden is great fun, and so is using my fruits, veggies, and herbs in the kitchen, so I frequently share simple living garden recipes on my channel. If any of this sounds interesting to you, be sure to subscribe — just click below!

~~Three GREAT Gardening BOOKS ~ For Those Who Love to Experiment~~
In this video, I share three excellent gardening books with you, each with their own unique emphasis. The first thoroughly and beautifully explores and explains the world of growing plants for creating your own teas. Another is an incredibly interesting look at edible plants and trees you can grow, many of which you probably have never heard of or seen. So many great ones! The last book is written by the experienced British gardener Carol Klein, and she shares in extensive detail (along with gorgeous, detailed photos!) how to propagate almost any plant you want!
***I’d love to hear what perennial plants YOU’RE growing in YOUR garden! And what annual veggies have you chosen for this season? Are you growing any berries or fruit this year? Let me know in the comments!

Fantastic video 📹 👍 👍 ❤️ ❤️
I'm sorry to hear that you've been ill. My goodness! My berry plants are small and new to my garden so it will be awhile before I get berries. Your berries look great. I've not heard of Gaumi Berries. I love the variety of fruits that you have. I wish I could have the fruit trees here but the gophers and ground squirrels destroy the tree roots and bark. I am trying dwarf varieties that I can keep in planters. Well done!
I'm glad to see you on your feet. I've been very busy in my garden. The pickleworm moth and Japanese beetles have come early this year, so I am busy with pest management. I only use organic material in my garden, making it a bit more difficult. My strawberries are still producing. I've harvested my first squash, golden beets—I eat both the tops and roots, and had a large potato harvest. Heat is getting to my snow peas, so I did a final harvest, and put the planters to bed until later. Tomorrow I will take a second cut of Japanese Giant Red mustard—the final cut? Also, tomorrow or Tuesday I will pick my first cucumbers. I've nearly harvested out my spring crops, my summer crops are doing well, squash, pole beans, peppers, tomatoes, assorted herbs, dwarf zinnias, and marigolds. For the first time since I started gardening, I have empty garden space resting, covered with leaves I collected last fall. I am already planning my fall garden, and will start planting mid August and September.
I'm happy you're feeling better. We had that flu run through our household. I had a fever of 101, bad headache and chills. I hope yours wasn't that bad. Love looking at the garden and all the berries and of course the cherries.
Glad you are feeling better, no fun being I’ll. so much lovely fruit yumm. Going to add Mulberry tree to my list of garden wants.
Hi Kim.Sorry for the illness, I have also been coughing, but it is just a cough. I wish you a quick recovery and I am glad to see you today. "Only one ripe berry because you have been eating them all along." 😂😂😂😂I did not know fruits take so long to grow until I started planting them and had to read about it and learn more from You Tube.
The Gaumi Berries are interesting, it is amazing what nature can produce. I think I also need to grow something that is drought resistant because the rains here have been inconsistent.
Wow! The baby chicks have grown. I laughed out loud when you mentioned that there is a rooster there. I still remember what you said about roosters. 12:48 I realized the birds sometimes don't mess the fruits much, last time they did not finish my cherry tomatoes. There are times we are unlucky, I remember picking my red tomatoes before they were fully ripe because of the monkeys. 17:18 Yum yum.
Bringing the children to the garden to pick cherries is very therapeutic.
Mulberries grow easily and they have a strong taste. Does the tree have caterpillars?
The garden did not seem neglected though. That was a wonderful tour. I wish you the best and looking forward to more. 🍀☘🌿🌾🪴🌱
Wow so many different berries Kim! If you had to pick just one variety to have in your garden what would it be? We eventually would love to have more berries in our garden 🙂 -Cara
I'm glad to see you out and about in the garden and getting over that terrible flu. Your garden looks amazing as usual. Goumi berries are awesome. My trees produce pounds of fruit and enough to share with the birds
