Winged beans, also known by many names including Goa beans or Asparagus pea, are a type of legume that is commonly eaten in Southeast Asian cuisine. I believe they are native to PNG. They taste like a cross between a snow pea and asparagus. They are mostly grown in tropical regions and are very easy to grow! The pod of the winged bean is long and grows in a wing-like shape, hence the name “winged beans.” The pod contains small edible seeds that are similar in taste and texture to green beans. The leaves, flowers, and roots of the plant are also edible and used in various dishes. They produce a massive crop in the tropics so as well as eating the leaves and beans we feed them to our chickens and guineafowl.

  1. Great timing. Im in South East Goldcoast. Iโ€™ve just started harvesting my first winged beans in my small backyard veg garden. I was wondering what size to pick them. Weโ€™ve been experimenting and looks like we are getting them same as you. I hadnโ€™t thought to put them in salads or curries. Will try that next. Thank you ๐ŸŒฑ

    … if the beans are too big, old and hard to eat, just save them on the vines to harvest later for seeds to grow next year.
