My first mossarium! Any suggestions for sculpting a better looking slope?

Hi all, I made this little mossarium using moss and rocks from the neighborhood. The fern is a rabbit’s foot fern.

For the slope, I used clay cat litter (Dr. Elsey’s Ultra) mixed with coco coir and moistened with warm water. I’ve read this has been used for vivarium backgrounds. It was very easy to work with and the stones stuck in like glue. However, the color is awful. I don’t think I’ll use it again.

Anyone have suggestions on how to create a similar slope effect that’s more natural looking? Thanks!

I think it looks great! I’ve used red clay collected from my yard that I keep in a ziplock bag for a month to make sure it’s free of pests (or at least has fewer pests 😂). I think you could probably just buy pottery clay of some sort but I could be wrong. As far as I know, that should work fine for moss since it doesn’t have roots but it might not be great for plants. I love the way you’ve done the rocks! I think it has a lovely natural look to it.
