◇ Honenin is only open to the public during the first week of April and the 18 to 24 of November.
This time, we created a garden with a charcoal river in the garden of a temple called Honenin in Kyoto.
Please take a look until the end.

A special garden and a wonderful lesson. Congratulation!
Reminded me ok Sakuteiki – the book.
Thank you for showing us a different way to landscape. I can’t wait to check out Mr. Marc’s book. I love seeing different ways to design open spaces. I’m going to school to be a landscape architect this is helpful.
what an honor to design & build such a beautiful garden….. and so beautifully captured. Great camera work….
so can you gide to have a super easy and most simple gardens with no spaces at all .
I liked your work .thanks for sharing your skil
from Pakistan
Very good to see that you connected with Marc. I will be in Japan next year with a group of Aquascape pond builders to do a project. I’ll let you know more as the details emerge. Hope to meet you face to face at that time. ❤
Takk!
Beautiful garden!💚 really peaceful!🌿🌱
Nice.
Honenin is such a beautiful place; it was one of my favorite gardens I visited during my last trip! There are so many interesting features, including the sand mounds, the thatched gate, and now, this charcoal river! When I visited Honenin in 2018, it was the same time of year, when the Camellia were in bloom. I love how they place the Camellia leaves and flowers in the water features! This garden looks so amazing through your lens! Great work!
So lovley and serene, thank you for sharing.
I see the beauty in that space but I can’t take the emptiness.
Hermoso jardín! Dan ganas de quedarse contemplándolo! Saludos y gracias!
The filming and editing really communicated the atmosphere of the garden, I think. A very nice experience.
What a wonderful garden, so inspirational, thankyou x
That was the most peaceful 15:58 mins I have watched for a very long time. Imagine coming out of one of those rooms in the morning sitting down and letting the world go by.
Wonderful video! Hopefully the first of many collaborations with Mr. Keane!
美しい…
Stunning! What a privilege to have your work at a temple. God bless
wow! cool. such an interesting idea to combine carbon cycle in nature with philosophical concept of Ku..
can't wait to watch your new channel!!
Your videos remind me that the journey is as much if not more important than the destination. I have wasted so many years getting things completed I rarely took joy in actually doing things. I watch these artisans as they create and I get more pleasure in the simple, methodical actions of creating as much if not more than the final creation.
As always Thank you.
Thank you for this video. I love Marc Peter Keane and have several of his books. I love the way he explained the Buddhist concept of emptiness in his design of this garden. I hope there will be more of the symbolism explained in the design of future gardens. 🙏🙏
I am an Architect and I've always been Interested in landscaping. I am a fond of Japanese design in general because it is "disciplined" and Unpretentious. I want to learn more about it. This video you share helps me a lot. Thank you!
It is such a privilege to see Mr. Keane at work on his garden. As someone who has read both of his books, (The Art of Setting Stones, and On Arcs and Circles) I can say that I have grown to love and appreciate the work of Marc Peter Keane to a level beyond that of any other. To see this artist and poet at work on his own creation is inspirational. Thank you for producing this video.
Inspiring 💝🙏
Honenin is only open to the public during the first week of April and the 18 to 24 of November.
「法然院は4月の第1週と11月の18日から24日のみ一般公開されます。」
Very beautifull I love Japanes garden💚
Love the detail and explanation of the design concept. Are there any books that explain the specific handrail design seem duplicated around 1000’s of temples, shrines, bridges etc, as they tend to be identical.👏
Nice
Beautiful!
This is so exciting – I have read books by Marc Peter Keane which I absolutely enjoyed reading. They are so informative yet also entertaining, really special. It is a great pleasure to see his work and explanations in your video, thank you very much for this!
Credits also to your choice of music which perfectly mirrors the peaceful atmosphere of this garden! 🤗
I have one technical question: is the layer underneath the actual charcoal logs also (finer) charcoal? And if so – why is that – instead of using (darker) gravel, too? Sorry if I am missing the obvious here, I am just an amateur… 🙄
Empty or not, the charcoal river is a masterpiece. I admired the stone river at my ordination-master's temple in Taiwan, but you beat it by a mile.
Beautifully expressed, thank you for sharing!
Absolutely beautiful! Thank you!
Thank you for this video.
I have watched this on a Sunday morning in the UK, before going to work… It was a beautiful way to start the day.
Wow! The camelias!
How can we purchase the charcoal in the USA? Thanks.
Perfect timing as I was wanting to do same but with river rocks in contrasting colors against the white stone.
Thanks for inspiration!
What as simple as that it’s beautiful well done
Markさん、this garden is absolutely stunning . It is so reflecting what's happening in the world. We all need a place to breath in and out. Thank you for your beautiful concept and keeping Japanese tradition alive! Wonderful!
