Could you explain more how to protect a carrot plant from cross pollinating? What do I cover it with and how should I secure it? Also, are there any vegetables that you can plant with or near potatoes? Thank you ! 😊❤🌿
If you grow your own carrot seed, it will last a decade if stored properly. We are using seed that we harvested in 2012 for this years crop. It germinated great and the carrots are now six inches tall. Just keep it damp, while it is coming up, with a handheld sprayer like you buy in home depot. Keep the spray a fine spray. It is easiest to start carrot seeds in late winter, but they can be started in July or even in December. If you start them in the warm or hot months, put a 2×4 over the row after planting and wetting the row. Check every day for water needs and as soon as the seeds show sprouting, remove the 2×4. Do not plant the deed more than 1/4" deep at the most. We grow Scarlet Nantes.
I like to plant spinach because I have low iron in my blood eating spinach helps with the iron
I also have kidney failure I am on medication to jump start it also found out things I can use detox my kidneys I will be buying seeds for bok choy start detoxing my kidneys to see if they will start working properly again
Also drinking apple cider vinegar and lemon juice
Because I do not want to go on to dialysis
I also like growing green beans
I love to dry the carrot tops and use them in soups and stews all winter. So yummy!
Remember saying you’re good at growing some things and struggle with others. I have never had a successful carrot crop😂😂😂. I’ve thinned , I’ve tried beds, containers and I sometimes get the lovely greenery but the root is smaller than my little finger. In my part of Georgia we grow lots of turnips, potatoes, and sweet potatoes just not carrots. You’ve inspired me to try again. If nothing else, they’re pretty greenery.
We really enjoy this channel. Thank you and we appreciate what you do! This was so detailed. Suggestion: can you do some lessons on freeze drying. We have one on the way. And yes, I’m completely intimidated! Thank you so much!❤
Growing up my dad always had a big garden. He never had to thin his carrots because I would do it for him by going and pulling one or two almost everyday and cleaning them on my shirt to eat. 😄 Still do it now in my garden. The flavor is so much better than what you get in the store. 👍🏻💖
The Chinese call Carrots man made Ginseng . The one restaurant supply house that we like to go has 50lb bags of Canadian grown carrots for $18 cash only . I like to slice them about 1/8 inch thick and put ranch powder and freeze dry
Potatoes. 😛
Your carrots look amazing! I did not know about the 3 year shelf life, and the nitrogen – maybe that's why my carrots have always tasted bad. Watch out for that Wascally Wabbit! (aka husband in shorts)
Your audio sounds much better😊
I let some come back the next year after overwintering and was able to save the seed.
Great gardening tips! Thanks!
My grandma used to make carrot pie with mashed cooked carrots and seasoned just like pumpkin pie. I couldn't tell it wasn't actually pumpkin pie other than the brighter color.
Be really careful with juiced carrots because they are so filled with sugar. When I was young I went to a juice bar, O my, I nearly passed out I had become hypoglycemic.
Love carrots. However, my husband hates them. Not that easy to grow for me. I keep trying though.
Yes, I carrot-all 😉 I love carrots too!
They also make beautiful white flowers but will grow about 3-4 foot tall (in year 2). Let them go to seed and then you can gather the seeds and not have to buy more. I actually don’t even plant seeds anymore. They reseed. And no, in my area I do not have any poisonous look alikes. Good video. They are easy to grow. Home grown carrots taste way better than store bought.
The greens can also be added to salad or when you make a pesto.
Awesome, since you covered carrots this time how about covering Rabbits next! Thanks for all you do your videos are great my wife and I have followed for years.
When you are growing carrots that you plan on leaving in the ground over the winter, how much time should they grow before thinking they are safe for over the winter? I was thinking of planting them in between my garlic and then when I can harvest my garlic, I could plant some more. Do you think that would work? Your carrots look amazing!
The amount of cabbage is directly proportional to the square root of the carrots divided by the volume of the Mayo. That’s Cole’s Law.
Uggh, care-at-all? lol
We used to grow beautiful carrots but a few years back they wouldn't come up for three years then two years ago we got something that almost resembled a carrot but they were wrinkled. Last year we finally got a half row and they looked and tasted like carrots. This year I am hoping for a lot more.
I love garden carrots. We can ours. Some are canned as just carrots in a jar and we have canned some along with potatoes, onions, and pieces of stew meat in broth. It makes an easy and quick meal for a family. Besides growing a garden we have a couple of beehives in the backyard.
if i may add a few things:
1. if you have tree stumps that are slowly rotting away? (or you want to rot away) you can put an open bottom raised bed (or fire ring) around the stump, and fill it with dirt and plant right over the stump. carrots can go around the perimeter where its just dirt, and shallow rooted things in the center.
2. there are short "ball" carrots, that grow more like a beet or turnip shape! they are GREAT options for when you have limited soil depth.
3. I plant carrots in a ring around the outside of my bigger pots as a sort of "fern" and plant tall flowers in the center.
oh gosh i forgot to answer your question!
i dont think i have a single "favorite" survival crop, but if i had to pick i would say any of the perennial herbs, especially Thyme.
thyme is a seasoning but also a noted antisceptic.
if you want to pick a vegetable, carrots are a good choice, so would potatoes be (on a pure calorie basis)
