Welcome to Veggy 360. In today’s video, you will learn about dwarf tomatoes and how to plant them in containers.

Most of you are familiar with indeterminate and determinate tomatoes. However, dwarf tomatoes are a third category of tomatoes, combining the best features of indeterminate and determinate tomatoes: the compact growth habit of determinates and the steady production of tomatoes throughout the whole growing season of indeterminates.

Thanks to the Dwarf Tomato Project, there are now almost 140 varieties of dwarf tomatoes available. These varieties were developed by world-wide, grassroots effort of volunteer hobby gardeners. More information on the Dwarf Tomato Project can be found at https://www.dwarftomatoproject.net/

This year I am trying eight varieties of dwarf tomatoes:
• Adelaide Festival
• Maralinga
• Rosella Crimson
• Sweet Scarlet Dwarf
• Dwarf Mocha’s Cherry
• Dwarf Mocha’s Plum
• Oriole
• Tanager

I ordered the first four varieties from https://www.victoryseeds.com/. I am not affiliated with them but they have a great selection of dwarf tomato varieties. Additionally, the seeds that I bought from them are high quality, and germinated at an almost 100% rate.

The last four varieties are from Craig LeHoullier and are still in a trial period so are not yet available for purchase.

  1. Hello Linda. Thanks for your video. I'd like to plant a couple of dwarf tomato project seeds but need some help. Could you please help provide some advice as to which three beefsteak and three cherry varieties are best suited for zone 7b with hot and humid summers? I'm also planning to get my seeds from Victory Seeds. Thanks.

  2. It is entirely possible that I missed it, but one should point out that the dwarf tomato project tomatoes are all "open pollinated", meaning that one can save the seeds and they will grow "true" the next year. This is in contrast to the very common "hybrid" tomatoes that are not guaranteed to grow true, in fact, not likely to.

  3. Nice information! I want to give these dwarf tomatoes a try hydroponically, since other varieties are too large. Do you have any experience or info on that? Thanks.
