Today’s video is all about feeding a tropical style garden in spring, the fertiliser and soil improvers I use to improve the soil and set up big growth and huge exotic leaves later in the summer. Whilst I talk mainly about using Vitax 6X natural fibrous fertiliser, I also discuss my three step process of feeding my exotic jungle style garden – soil improving with organic matter and manure mulches from Autumn to Spring, using slow release plant food and fertiliser in Spring then topping this up with plant-specific and high nitrogen feed for lots of leafy growth over summer. Whether you want to improve the structure, water-retention, health, or nutrient levels of your garden soil, break up clay or add goodness to sandy soil, organic matter really makes a huge difference. I use this around my Gunnera, banana plants, tree ferns, palms, Hostas – pretty much everything leafy really! Something great you can do now while the weather may be grey and rainy!

Only have pots would love if you could include plants for pots
Fire Pit, Fire Pit, Fire Pit….. But seriously, great advice as always. I mulch when the tempts start to drop in Winter to insulate all the plants and add a boost in spring. Then I will add chicken manure pellets about every 4-6 weeks throughout the growing season. I also occasionally top up with a liquid sea weed spray when I remember. It's really about finding a balance that you can afford and what your plants actually need. But I'm almost out of chicken manure pellets, so I think I'll give this product a go.
So helpful, thanks George.
I always thought the guidance was you mulched in April. Be interested to hear people's opinions on Autum or Spring mulching
Thanks George, have ordered a bag, weirdly 2 bags are more than 2x£12.80 so they’re on to you 🤣 I did need to see you wafting the stuff around as otherwise I’d have been piling it high and digging it in #novice. I’ll pop a little bit around my Tetrapanax, it’s still a lifeless 5ft high chunky stick but hoping for some growth soon after this next cold spell early next week perhaps. Or maybe I should leave it to gently come round, not give it some planty red bull! My dogs are going to love the scent by the sounds of it 🤣 Take care, happy weekend to you and the family
Brilliant stuff been using 6X since the 90s great value for money . My dad used to dog sit for me when I went on holiday and his favourite saying was ." Have you been feeding that dog of yours 6 X it stinks" 😅😅😅 . the joys of owning Bullmastiffs
Hi george is your Gunnera a true Manicata or a Tinctoria, be honest!!
YEAAAAA! I use that too.
Yes, soil health is really important!!! ❤
Great video! Love this stuff, very easy to use. My parents introduced me to it, they use it on their allotment. It does stink though!
Do you get a problem with rats using farmyard manure? I used it last year and rats came in! So I stopped immediately 😂
👌👌👌👌Thanks definitely need to get some 👍
No chicken poo 💩 this year? It can’t have gone up in price that much?
Ah… the chicken manure pellets explain why your doggos are extra long!
Superb pointless demonstration 😂😂😂. Slow-mo please next time as the feed is thrown into the soil plus background emotional tear-jerking music
My Gunnera went from looking dead to leaves 30/40 cms wide in 2 weeks😂. As i have my bananas in containers i’ve been using my homemade seaweed fertiliser from around May onwards.
They should sponsor you and so should North Face😂
Great timing George, I wasn't sure if I should feed my trachycarpus or Tree ferns with some frost still about. That Vitav 6 x sounds good 👍
Bought some Vitax thanks George

Great video George – you've inspired me to buy a bag. The makers will be wondering what's happened and why they've suddenly had a run on their products! 🤣
