Welcome to my latest video about my off grid homestead in Central Portugal!

In this video I did something I told myself I wouldn’t do… and now I have an introduction to make. In the end it’s a very good thing, but my self control is questionable at best! ๐Ÿ˜† I had a mini shopping spree this week too, but all for useful things (except for one weird thing)! I do a bit of a show and tell and then move into the garden to plant some things. I also spend some time on my garden’s infrastructure… finally! A job I’ve been putting off since last year.

I hope you like the video! Thanks for watching, please consider subscribing if you haven’t already. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Love the sailcloth. Had one for 3 years and no problems. Love the trees & watching planting. Amazing progress!

  2. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Iโ€™m exactly like you, crazy plant lady.
WHAT???? โ‚ฌ17 for Manny? Why not get a couple to cross pollinate?
Are you planning to make an arch with the pair of kiwis?
I think Mikey wants in on the action. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  3. Maybe I shouldn't shake Manny, probably not a great beginning: continues to shake Manny!๐Ÿ˜‰ The shade sail is a great idea. Hope they work out for you and you don't end up flying off to Oz with the crazy wind!
    Hugs from ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

  4. Hi Kirsty, like a kid in a candy shop with trees and parcels. Soaker hoses are great, but you will need to prepare soil, plant and then lay soaker hose and lightly cover with straw to protect hose and keep water cool. No warm water on the lettuce please. I have made tunnels with shade cloth to protect plants salad and others when itโ€™s just tooooooooo hot. Cut1.5 metre normal hose lengths, stick bamboo poles up each end of them ,other end in ground and drape shade cloth over. 5 sets covers about 2.5 to 3.00 metres. Lots of places in Aus have temps 35-40 for days on end in summer. You get pretty inventive. Shade cloth cover are virtually compulsory for school playgrounds now.

  5. i love your videos but you are making them too long..the best way to maximise content and viewers would be to release 3, 10 minute videos on consecutive days or alternate days..people watch alot of 10 minute videos because they subscribe to alot of channels..it also makes it more exciting if you leave a cliff hanger..anticipation..it gets viewers wanting more..catch you on the next time..also frees up more time for you..

  6. We call that green glass ball, a mooch ball (in West Virginia USA), it goes on a concrete stand in your garden.

  7. You farm is coming together nicely you mentioned shading the from of your house. Have you considered a pergola on which you can either cover with shade cloth or grow grapes which would give shade in summer but the winter sun would be able to warm the house. I believe this may be the solution to your problem God bless

  8. You might like to consider a roof vent to suck the hot air out of your house. You can use natural vents that use the wind to suck out the air or electric powered vents.

Alternatively, you might like to consider ceiling insulation.

Shade sails are fantastic. You need to stop sunlight from hitting the stone walls , on all sides of your house.

I live in the Perth Hills in Western Australia, where we have very hot summers.

My house has verandas on all four sides, under the verandas I have lots of pots plants that absorb the heat.

I also have roof insulation and roof vents.

During the day, I keep all the doors and windows closed so that hot air doesnโ€™t enter the house. I also keep all the curtains and blinds closed to stop any sunlight entering the house. At night, I open all the curtains, windows and doors to let in the cool night air. The house cools down every night.

I have air-conditioning but I only use it once or twice a year when the temperatures are above 40 degrees Celsius.

  9. I'm glad your kiwi has a mate now and your plans for Mani the mango seem sound to me, they do like water in my experience. Irrigation hints much appreciated as that is a big thing for me before the end of the year. I love the green ball, if you have the epening facing outwards you could put tea candles in at night.
A shadecloth tensioning set like this may assist avoiding knots etc … then its easy on and off using carabiners … https://www.amazon.com.au/Stainless-Rectangle-Installation-Accessory-Anti-Rust/dp/B07KPTCKN5/ref=asc_df_B07KPTCKN5/?tag=googleshopdsk-22&linkCode=df0&hvadid=341774475295&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12873196926787101422&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9070567&hvtargid=pla-816700552222&psc=1
    No trellis for kiwi???
We use 70% shade most of the time in Perth summers ….

  10. Oooo prezzys
Nothing wrong with buying more trees ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚
This is what I do for my trees if they have a wound
Lennys wound if you have a candle melt some when cooler put it on the wound it will stop bugs from getting in or you could just use a bit of tape,if you use tape donโ€™t forget to remove it after a while
Sail will look awesome when up, which one was it thinking of getting on for my daughter
    Thank you for sharing ๐Ÿ˜

  11. Iโ€™m extremely proud of you!! Working so hard is keeping you in excellent shape!! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

  12. we have some mango trees in our gardens, different kinds. i don't like these trees because they are an attraction for the giant red ants that build their nests in the dying leaves. when a mango tree reaches a certain size, it has to be pruned thousands of times. moreover, it takes years before it produces fruit. the ant bites are very painful. our gardener is always mad at me when i ask him to prune the trees – I am in Thailand.
