A longer Q&A today as I multitask and pot up dahlias at the same time.

  1. Hi Erin, You're so right about us British & our garden centres. It's part of the experiance having a cuppa & a slice of cake, even the smallest garden centres have a least a small area for tea & cake. In winter we can get soups too, and if we're lucky a bacon butty ! As you mention we do garden in all weathers & soup is often needed 🙂
Enjoying the updates on the upcoming project , happy gardening from Cheshire, Uk

  2. Several years ago, my sister and I went to Amsterdam on vacation. By chance, it was the Annual Garden Tour where selected private gardens are open for public viewing for a few days. We saw all shapes, sizes, and styles of GORGEOUS gardens. As a bonus, you often had to walk through the 17th century houses to access the gardens at the back. Great fun to see the inside of these picturesque buildings! I think the tour was in mid-June but I can't recall for certain. A reminder that when you visit places, your trip may coincide with local private garden tours. Be sure to check.

  3. Okra is very delicious roasted. Also we grow it because you need okra for gumbo! Thanks for all your information. I'm 8A but still find your information helpful!

  4. Love the postcards. My list of gardens to visit looks like Santa's list, a never-ending scroll. But the great gardens of England are definitely at the top. Yes, you need to visit Williamsburg. It is just a short trip up to Gloucester VA to Brent & Becky's Bulbs (with display garden) and the Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond. And the highway from Richmond to Williamsburg that runs along the James River! So much history. Thanks for the links to the crates. I've had some in my cart at Amazon for a while, but I guess it's time to pull the trigger and order.

  5. I just got my dahlia shipments, and I bought some dahlias from a farm in your neck of the woods near Port W. I started pots and dirt when it was 80 degrees last week, but I’m going to wait another 2 weeks to plant. It looks chilly next week yet. No neighbor bashing! Ha! My neighbor is my brother, God has given me patience.

  6. This video was delightful! I know it was not the slickest video but that is why I loved it. It made me smile. We went to Iceland and Greenland last summer and I saw a meconopsis in Iceland, and beautiful poppies and tons of lupines in Greenland. Unfortunately, I didn't get postcards, just pics on my phone. Its not too late to go to these places it didn't seem crowded to me and I don't like crowds.

  7. I jumped the gun and have dahlias sprouted already….actually plants 😮. I'm in 5a. Can I really put them out in a temporary greenhouse now? I don't think nights will go below 32 anymore. I can't use a heater. Even tho I pinched them I think I'm going to have some really tall ones.

  8. Love these post cards. I just returned from a week in FL with my kids at universal. It was nice but this has inspired me to have a new plan which focuses alittle on me. For every vacation I will incorporate a garden tour. I am so stoked about this idea just need to execute. I can’t retire yet but everyone and especially Sandy has motivated me to enjoy life alittle more!!

  9. Honestly, I'm astonished that some people feel the need to get all up in YOUR business. My goodness. I'm looking forward to seeing how this new planting will go. Love your channel!

  10. Wow, I had the issue! When I moved into my house the previous owners did nothing to maintain the yard and the trees that lined my fence line were HIDEOUS. My neighbors had the same ugly trees on their side of the fence. All of those trees were diseased with cedar apple rust, so not only were the junipers the ugliest things I have ever seen, they had these slimy orange fungal spores that would emerge every time it rained. I couldn’t stand it so I cut my trees down and I asked my neighbors if I could pay to cut theirs down as well and I offered to buy them several new trees to replace them. They were super nice and said they would cut them down themselves and they wouldn’t allow me to pay them at all. They understood that the trees weren’t healthy and they loved looking at my garden. It was a win-win!

RIP Mike, you were such a nice neighbor 😢

  11. I'm semi retired and traveling to Mexico etc and I didn't think of sending you a postcard!!! Sandy is indeed a bright spot.
    Warmest regards
    Jennie

  12. Erin, you crack me up! “Why don’t we have Cake? …and Tea?”
Made me smile! Enjoyed the video. 😊

  13. Winterthur and Longwood are definitely worth the trip! Check out the fairy garden at Winterthur…a hidden gem!

  14. For the 2nd Winter (in a row) I've not removed my dahlia tubers from their growing pots. In the Fall of 2021 I brought the pots inside and removed all actively growing materials. Letting the pots go (almost) completely dry I left them in a cool room. In late March or early Apr (Zn 5b / suburban Chicago) I begin light watering and sure enough – eyes/growth stems begin to appear through the soil. As they will have been in the same soil & pots for 2 yrs, this Fall I'll probably pull them out and store as you do ob=ver the Winter. But so far it has worked beautifully (and work-free!!) for me! I do enjoy watching you work tho, Erin…

  15. Glad you mentioned that you can plant less than perfect looking dahlias. I had some semi shriveled Penhill Watermelon & pre sprouted them & they sprouted like gang busters!

  16. Hey Erin, Loving the postcards especially as spring has been teasing us this year. Just a thought about eating at a garden center. Countryside Greenhouse in Allendale Michigan near Grand Rapids is a mega 21-acre greenhouse. A bit commercialized but has popcorn, cotton candy, and hotdogs albeit carnivalish. The children love it and "big kids do too"! 😅

  17. If you could buy light what would you pay….what a slogan for the real estate market of NYC. Top floor penthouses cost 10s of millions of dollars. Views are light, and light is everything! Love that we get to create with the light in our own gardens – it is priceless working alongside nature.

  18. One of our local garden centers has a beer garden, serving local craft beers. Love it it’s easy to get the hubby to go.

  19. Erin, it is all going to look really nice. 🌿
Question: how do you trim your boxwoods to get that perfect sphere in those gray pots we can see in this video .
    🌿
I have mine in pots, I trim the tops and I still have a boxwood that’ll like they had a haircut just on the top! lol 🌿😎🌷

  20. I live in mid illinois and left some dahlias in the ground (too much work) and they are coming up!! They are in a well draining area. Who knew?

  21. Watson’s Nursery in Puyallup (Western WA state) has a restaurant in a big greenhouse. Never tried the restaurant, but the nursery is a fantastic perennial source!

  22. Excellent video. I’m lucky like Sandy and recently retired. Many gardens on my bucket list but the hard part is most need to be visited when I need to be home tending my own space. I am also headed back to chanticleer and Longwood in August and adding in Bartrams and Winterthur. I can’t wait! Retirement is the gift that keeps on giving ❤

  23. If your are ever near Indianapolis Indiana, stop in at Allisonville Nursery off of 96th street. It has beautiful gardens, plants and home accessories. Most importantly it has the most stunning bistro. They serve tea, sandwiches and desserts in a stunning sitting area.

  24. I live next to a small lake and water the huge flower pots at the entry to the neighborhood from the lake. I save milk jugs. I think it eliminates the need for fertilizer.

  25. Always so curious when hearing ‘better than Sungold tomato’ 😁
Can you please clarify variety you’ve got? Super Orange grape tomato doesn’t come up in Google search

  26. I love your gardening spirit
    Your videos are so informative
I live in Binghamton NY zone 5 and I have been gardening at my house for about 5 seasons definitely a work in progress
Question, how do you become a master Gardener?

  27. We are lucky to have Cafe Equinox "caffeine and chlorophyll" near us at 5 acre Family Tree Nursery in Shawnee KS. Love the Q&A and the postcards!

  28. Hi Erin: Loved this video so much. Lol I love you on too much coffee. Great info, as always. Thanks so much for showing the shriveled dahlia tubers – I have a bunch that look like that and I thought I'd have to toss them.
