This week, we visit a stunning 2-bedroom 1,442 square feet ground floor condo owned by Nicholas and Jessica. Designed by Studio Metanoia, their design brief was inspired by the works of Sergey Makhno, known for combining Ukrainian influences with the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-sabi.

This home utilities a mix of rough, natural materials and earthy hues, as well as the textured microcement/limewash floors and walls to create a homely ambiance.

Nicholas and Jessica’s desire for an imperfect, organic and raw aesthetic led them to source for pieces from various locations. They wanted a home where each space flowed seamlessly, connecting with one another. A large dining space was a must, as they enjoyed hosting guests. The previously enclosed kitchen was opened up to create a more spacious feel and a custom mould was mounted to the arch, adding interest to the entranceway.

The living and dining areas are united by a beautiful long bench, while the beam discovered above the main window adds character and complements the overall design.

The patio area presented great potential despite its initial state. Custom shelving and an automated misting system were added, while broken tiles were added instead of the original flooring to create a blank canvas.

The microcement finishes in the bathroom, including the sink and shelf, added to the home’s unique character, as did the absence of traditional doors, replaced with curtains for a more connected feel.

Lastly, the open-concept bathroom contributes to the illusion of space for their master bedroom.

  1. While true there is some resemblance of Bali-style, actually a modern Persian-Moroccan style cames to mind more – search up XVA Art hotel Dubai as an example.

Really love the entire theme going with very unique features all around (I personally really like that extensive console/seating), thanks for showcasing.

  2. The colour palette, lighting and textures are really beautiful and relaxing! Stunning!

  3. I love the layout of the house but the no door concept is a no no for me especially for the bathroom. I cannot imagine doing my private business in the toilet when people can just simply come in unannounced.

I feel the house is too dark and moody for my taste. I hope the sunlight actually reaches the kitchen because it’s just too dark. For the kitchen, it’s advisable to use a bright light than yellow light when you are preparing food. A dim light source in the kitchen is a recipe for disaster.

Is it me or is every Singaporean house featured here does not have colour? White wall, white couch, white countertop, white cabinet and white kitchen seems to be the go to design. I work in healthcare so this type of design reminds me of hospital. I think just a pop of colour can make the house looks more alive.

The only thing from the house I love is the garden. I can see that the owners have a green thumb because the plants look healthy and lively.

  4. guys take note ah, microcement is almost the most expensive material you can have for your floor/wall finishing ( prob besides actual real marble slabs), forget about this if you have limited budget for reno

  5. Amazing space but I gotta be honest: beige on beige on beige is just too much. You can have a sleek, cozy, modern space with some color, too.

  6. This is really an out-of the box design indeed. I would describe it as a modern version of those all stone or cave houses in parts of Greece, South Mediterranean, Balkans, Turkey ,North Africa but with soft and contemporary furnishings.

  7. The double vanity sink though? Why one of them is so much lower haha like imagine bending over everytime u have to use the sink! I can imagine it for kids but for adults nah
