The “what-iffers” frustrate me. They won’t have a freezer (what if the power goes out) they won’t grow a garden (what if someone takes all the food in the garden) they won’t stock a pantry (what if people steal our food) They use all the “what ifs” as an excuse for their inaction and lack of preparation.
I’ve been an apartment dweller for ages, we’ve never really had the space for a freezer (other than the one that’s part of the fridge. I do try to make the best of our little freezer though.
I have put milk crates in my chest freezer to try to make finding things easier. Your idea of bags may be a better idea, because they are less bulky and probably could fit more in the freezer. Thanks for your helpful tips! Have a blessed day,😊
Totally agree how important freezers are.
We almost lost the contents of a freezer after a lightning strike on the power line triggered the GFCI the freezer gets its electricity from. The power was restored so thought everything was fine but it wasn’t. Every GFCI in the house was triggered.
We now use wireless thermometers/alarms in our freezers to let us know when the temperature gets above a preset temperature for whatever reason.
Good info thanks for sharing
I have the same freezer arrangement that you do. I keep meats in my upright, veggies and convenience foods in my chest and all of the breakfast stuff in my refrigerator freezer because my other 2 freezers are on the back porch. I’ve used the fabric bags from the dollar store and they work great. I highly recommended going through your freezers at least twice per year. We forget about items and need to get them used up before they go bad. I also have a large selection of home canned and commercially canned meats and veggies on my shelf. It is very important to have a good mixture of all. I am currently canning 8 pounds of dried pinto beans because we love them for a quick dinner.
We are looking for a deep freeze again since we moved, I miss it. I LOVE having a packed freezer. I nodded hard when you said putting your garden veggies in the freezer. And I can always can it later.
I have limited space in my small freezers.
I'm trying to use what I have in my freezers to, kind of, start over.
Summer and harvest time's coming and I want to have space ready for that.
And I'm pretty sure I have meat that need to be used soon.
Today I made a spicy lamb stew (?) out of a roast.
And freed up some space! ☺️
I use pillow cases in my chest freezer. I really need to do a reorganization soon.
Good video , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Good kitty ❤
I have a chest freezer because it’s small and fits beneath my electric switches box
It is frustrating because it’s easily a mess. I did try your bag plan and it made GREAT difference. Thank you for this plane, I’m very greatful.
Ps
And I used your pizza is comfort food, and you were correct.
I do use my freezer to be prepared because we live so far from the closest Walmart.
A round trip to Walmart and home is about a 3 hour trip, so we normally do shopping on the internet and make pick up times when my husband has to go to the va.
…although our tiny town does have a small independent grocery store, which we are glad for, but walmart does have better prices and much more variety.
Volume needs to be louder.
I don't consider my freezer food, food storage, I consider my outdoor free range chickens food storage and food security and sustainability, I do have a chest freezer, but its for ice 🧊 making for hurricane season.
Until I get the solar panels up, I place a 650A battery on my riding mower and charge it when mowing. I have several 1500 watt inverters ready to power all my appliances. Great info here. Thank you. God Bless and stay safe.
I would like to find out how long past best buy date is food good for. Was given over 300 cans of vegetables, fruit and fish that best buy date 2014.
We purchased a freezer alarm that lets us know if the temperature rises too high, that has a unit in th freezer and then one on the fridge since we might not hear a single alarm from the garage. It has gone off twice – both times when I had been working in the freezer and the door had been open too long. I'm with you on using the freezer as part of your preparedness plan!
Good video. I consider my freezer as a source of food for emergencies. When I was sick and couldn't go shopping, we had food that my husband could just pull out and cook. I have a chest freezer that is a pain in the neck. I try to keep it organized but life happens. Thanks for your videos.
I started putting my food in bags in the freezer a few years ago. It's a great system.I need to reorganize soon also. Thanks so much for all of your tips.
I love the colored tote idea. Great idea!
Your prepping pyramid is just like mine 😊. I only purchased a chest freezer last year and use it strictly for my meats. I have it hooked up to a solar generator with UPS capability. As for my refrigerator, I would have to have it rolled out and plugged into my older solar generator if there is a long power outage. I have an alarm plugged into an outlet if three power goes out . I use bins to separate my meats. My ultimate goal is a whole house battery backup system. Thanks for this video . I need to go thru my freezer. 😊
What a good suggestion about the reusable bags for chest freezer. I've got to do ours this week.
Good reminder with the thermometers.
Even better idea with the bags for chest freezer!
Love your personality and willingness to defy the status quo. I consider my freezer a gold mine and I may get a second one. I often get the markdowns too and got at Walmart one day chicken breasts for $7 a package when it's usually $10. I got nine 😅
Great tips!
Got one done. 2 uprights to go and a refrigerator freezer in the garage. Good thing – we won't starve on The Hill
My freezers are like Jenga I’m afraid to open them.
