  1. Hi Jim I have been enjoying your channel and jealous of your warm weather as I am in zone 5b near Chicago. Can you talk about Anthracnose? I had an issue with it last year on a lilac and clematis last year. Is immunox the only the option for dealing with it? What is it? And can you prevent it?

  2. I hope you won’t mind, but I have a nosy question. I am curious why you purchased a home with a smaller yard in an urban area. Were you looking to downsize your garden maintenance? I just started watching since the move and love watching you beautify your space and benefit nature. Thank you for your videos!

  3. The same goes for columbine some emphasize the (um) part and some just say col-bine. Of course regional language differences are why certain areas emphasize different parts of the words

  4. Hi Jim, you are on my regular sunday routine now! I am having some doubts about the hardiness of encore azaleas. I have yet to get one to bloom after a winter in the ground here, zone 6b lake Erie. I planted 5 different varieties (bravo, royalty, sangria, sunset) in full sun all listed as zone 6a hardy and they look terrible. They are mostly defoliated and if they manage to struggle back during the growing season, they will not bloom. I have a few more in the back in part shade, also terrible. I have clay soild, as do you. I amend top-down like you do. I have a zone 7a chiffon (by accident) that actually looks better than the others and will spit out 1-2 blooms after re-foliating in spring. I suspect it survives because its compact and under the shade and frost protection of an evergreen holly against the foundation. It doesn't get the wind or the winter sun or ??? I'd be interested to hear if others in zone 6 have success and what is the secret? I'd be willing to baby them for a year to see if it improves but what do you recommend? Do they need wilt pruf?

  5. With Spring upon us and plants emerging, I have a question about some perennials that return yearly. What causes some to get smaller year after year, eventually fading away to nothing? I've had it happen with hostas and also coneflowers.

  6. Thanks for answering my question on the American pillar! I’m in Ohio and through watching your channel I’ve definitely learned about a mixed border. I only bought 5 American pillars mainly to block out the baseball stands from
The high school baseball field behind us. I am
Using other evergreens but unfortunately we don’t have a lot of sense evergreens small enough for my .2 acre property so I’m using mainly a variety of arborvitae including American pillar, forever goldy, highlights, emerald green, Degroots and also an array of junipers including spartan, moonglow and blue point so far. I am also going to mix in some viburnum and also a larger old fashioned peegee hydrangea. I need to look into some smaller hollys to plant as well. I need things narrow and compact in various hues but also taller than my 6 foot privacy fence cause the privacy fence just isn’t enough with how our house sits. Thanks so much again for answering!

  7. We had 811 come out last year to mark utilities so we could plant a tree. We planted the tree plenty far away from the utilities. Now, the gas company came out and marked the gas line suspiciously exactly under the tree we planted for road work. Should we move it and if so when? Its only been in the ground a year, its a golden rain tree, and it's only (right now) about a skinny little 8 ft tall tree.

  8. Jim question about my forever goldy. This is its second year. I have noticed the side facing more sun has developed dried and brown tips. Checked the soil moisture in that same side and soil is moist. This is in Georgia. Any thought how to address that?

  9. Hi Jim,
I have a question about creating a berm. I have some space close to my house and would like to start a "raised" flower bed, i.e., put new top soil in a berm formation. I have heard that you should allow space between the house and plantings so the wall can "breathe". Is it a bad idea to pile top soil, about foot, against the foundation/wall of a house? Thanks for all your help!

  10. I can’t express strongly enough how much I appreciate you. You don’t try to sell us anything. You provide straight up information. I have learned so much for you and you have made me a better gardener.

  11. Hi Jim, thank you for another great Q and A video. I have a question, I have a magnolia tree in a 26”x26” pot, it has been doing ok in the pot , but last winter all the leaves dry out. We had a very dry winter. I see that it has some new shoots, do you think it will come back? I will like to give it a chance, but please let me know what you think.
    Thank you
Wilson, zone 7b. Western Long Island NY

  12. I’m growing Pentas this year after seeming them on your channel. My germination rate has been poor, even though I’m following the directions on the packet. Any suggestions? Thank you!

  13. The Hampton Preston Mansion and Gardens in South Carolina is just amazing. So many plants I have never seen in my life. I have got to go there. I believe my favorite is the Eucomis African Night Lily.I just love the foliage on it even without the bloom. It is gorgeous. QUESTION: Do you find when you go places and you say your name do people at the gardens already know who you are?
Thank you for taking us along. The walk through was so peaceful.

  14. Q&A Question: My dwarf arborvitae Danica was munched by the rabbits (from the top). Will it come back to its globe-shaped form? Do I need to prune it?

  15. How do you deal with ants in pots or in the middle of plants? I have ant colonies in my potted plants and an ant hill in the middle of my carex.

  16. Jim, I purchased 2 patio peaches "bonanza" variety, bareroot. I planted them in 11 gal planters with a mix of organic potting soil, a tiny bit of stone dust, composted cow manure, and pine bark soil conditioner on top. I am in zone 6b in new jersey. Any advice you might have on growing them would be soooo appreciated! thanks for all of the great information!, Sue

  17. Question: About 6 months ago, your video was called “Amazing Woodland Garden Tour” with Jay and Kim York. Loved that your! He mentions that his wife digs and stores caladiums. I would love more info on saving caladiums for replanting. I’m in central Arkansas zone 7b. Thank you!

  18. I have fallen in love with viburnum Davidi thanks to your video. It is only hardy to zone 7b… I am in zone 7a. Is there another viburnum that has the same characteristics that would be hardy in my zone? 😥

  19. My Garlic is not ready to harvest… could I plant tomato seedlings in and around the garlic that's almost finished?

  20. I can't find the video where you mentioned the kind of hose nozzle that's the best for a low pressure shower stream (no hissing). If you have the patience, could you repeat that in a future video? I might stumble across it again. Love your content. All the words.

  21. My seed starting medium often grows a white or green substance on the surface. Is that an indicator of a problem? I have used collected rainwater to water them occasionally, could that be part of it?

  22. Question: What are your thoughts on the Virginian (or Baby Giant) arborvitae? I have a couple of Forever Goldy's and was going to mix in another arborvitae along with some needle point holly for a screen. I don't want Green Giant and Emerald seem like they would suffer in full sun (7b N Georgia) in high summer. Virginian looks to be a good option on paper but wanted your thoughts.
