The large vanilla-scented flower clusters of tower well above other perennials in the late-summer garden. They attract big showy butterflies, such as monarchs and swallowtails, along with many native bees and other insects. ‘Gateway’ is a good variety for smaller gardens, growing to about 4 feet and featuring mauve flowers on dark purple stems.
