Mulch and Shade Cloth help cool crops going into the summer and they help warm crops in the middle of the summer. This is how mulch and shade can help your lettuce, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, and other crops to fully mature before bolting.

  2. Thank you so much. We’re already starting to heat up in zone 8 so I’m glad to learn about shade cloth. I’m planting several of the vegetables you mentioned. This will help me save the crops I started inside several weeks ago. I’m a new gardener so I appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

  3. Our lettuce is finally growing about 3" now.
Kale, Brussel sprouts, carrots, spinach & broccoli are taking off in Zone 6.

  4. I wonder if a lighter shade of mulch would also help keep the soil cool, like cypress mulch?

  5. I keep dragging my feet on getting some shade cloth and if I had some I could possibly have a better success rate with spring crops like broccoli 🥦 and cauliflower. I've had such bad luck I didn't start any seeds this spring. We also had 3 days in the upper 80's 2 were 89° in Pennsylvania already.

  6. I haven’t seen shade cloth for sale at either Home Depot or Lowe’s or anywhere else. I ended up buying burlap that’s sold in 36” wide rolls. The wind rips it up pretty soon though.

  7. We are expecting a high of 96 today on the Gulf Coast so cool season crops are only for fall. I can grow lettuce in my AeroGarden in the summer inside.
