Determinate tomatoes, also known as bush tomatoes, are a type of tomato plant that grow to a certain size and then stop, producing all of their fruit at once. Opposite to this is indeterminate tomatoes, which continue to grow and produce fruit throughout the growing season.
We prefer to plant determinate varieties in smaller containers because it grows to a certain size, making it much more manageable to grow in tiny spaces.
A couple of things to keep in mind when growing tomatoes in containers
Container size should be anywhere from 10-20GL
Choose a sunny location: Tomatoes need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day to thrive.
Use well-draining soil: Tomatoes prefer soil that is rich in organic matter and drains well. We usually go with equal amounts of coir, compost and perlite. Also add mulch on top to reduce frequent watering.
Provide support: Even though determinate tomatoes don’t grow as tall as indeterminate varieties, they can still benefit from support. Use cages to keep the plants upright and keep the fruits up.
Water regularly: Tomatoes need consistent moisture to produce healthy fruit. Water 2-3 times a week or more if your container dries up fast.
Fertilize appropriately: Use a balanced fertilizer that is high in phosphorus (the middle number on the fertilizer label) to promote flowering and fruiting. Apply twice a week in small amounts or heavily once a month.

Why do you only use determinate varieties in containers? I far prefer indeterminate here in the subtropics since they are basically perennials… Is there a reason not to grow them in containers?
