How and why you should “hill” potatoes. Potatoes are part of the nightshade family just like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. Just like tomatoes, they will grow roots wherever their stems come in contact with soil. More roots = more potatoes. Whether you’re growing potatoes in the ground, in containers, or grow bags, the hilling process is the same. Once stems reach 6-8 inches in length, push more soil around the stems to cover until you reach the top most leaves on the tips of the stems. If you’re growing them in containers/grow bags, repeat this process until the entire container is filled to the top with soil.
I planted these potatoes 3 weeks ago and just hilled them for the first time. I sprinkled some more fertilizer over the soil surface before I started hilling with more soil.
