Broccoli and Cauliflower heads will loosen and flower when soil temperature increase for a prolonged period. This is a problem for many gardeners growing these crops spring into summer. Shade cloth and mulch can make all the difference.

Would it help if I plant them in a more shaded area?
Great information! Thank you
Hi, Gary,
I’m sharing your channel with my gardening friend who lives in Japan.
Thank you for all that you do!
Have a great gardening season!
What about containers
Thanks Gary. Just in time for me. Havagudun bud.
Hi Gary! Just starting my broccoli now. About to transplant them. Should i use and water soluble fertilizer like fish emolsion?
Oh yes I'm just north of you in Pennsylvania and I have about a 75% failure rate on spring broccoli and cauliflower. Actually I have a package of Sun King Broccoli seeds but I have talked myself out of trying this year. I also have access to Amish farm markets where I can get their broccoli at a great price and great heads so it will open up some garden space I can put to better use. I will try some later for a fall crop.
Very interesting. Thanks. I will def try this. I can't get heads at all.
Observationally, I think that cardboard layer goes a long way to keeping the soil temp cool.
Thank you for this! I will try these tips. I just planted broccoli seed in pots, I hope this will work for me. My spring is really late this year. Since I am using weed fabric, do I just put mulch under the fabric? Also, a tip I found that worked for me to ward off cabbage butterflies was to plant garlic with it. I guess the butterflies don’t like the smell of garlic.
Thanks. Definitely helpful information.
Hi Gary,
you have helped me out so much!!
I have 1 quick question, If the fertilizer says it's for acid fruit tree's , dose it matter if I use on all tomatoes etc.
I saw it at Costco , I think the NPK was 433 but don't quote me . I believe it was $12.00 plus .
Thank you,
Brad.
NJ
Thank you. I'm in Maryland Zone 7 also and I have never had any success with growing broccoli in the spring for all the reasons you have explained. I am certainly going to give this a try.
Hello, I like watching your videos. But I have another question on a different subject. What temperature is safe to put cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers seedlings outside? For a couple of hours
Question about potatoes , Growing up I watched both my grandma and dad used 10-10-10 with their potatoes.
Thank you
Great tips. Thank you and regards from the UK
How Well Can Broccoli grow in Fabric pots?
Those very warm days sure were weird. Shade cloth is a garden saver. Not just for the cool weather plants, but for everything during summer heat waves. Even tomatoes need protection from high heat.
Omigosh! So – I thought I finally started my brassica's early enough to get them out in advance of our fast warming springs (we vacillate between super freezing and way too warm often within a month) – and now, we're getting warmer a month sooner than expected. My point – the cardboard under other mulch is brilliant. I planned on shade-cloth but this added makes so much sense. I'm in. Thank you!
