Today we look at how to over winter chilli plants in our November back garden tips from the UK. We are trying to over winter our chilli plants for the first time this November. We grow chillies each year in our back garden in the UK and we have seen other peoples tips for how to over winter them so will give it a go this year.
We first remove all of the chillies from the plant, including the un ripe chillies. These will make a chilli jam, be frozen or dried to preserve them. We have loads of good recipes that chilli peppers are used in.
To over winter a chilli plant we need to prune it. This can be done as it dies back or with a good prune in November before the leaves all fall off. We have opted to prune it hard now and remove any stems that are dying through the winter.
We will keep the compost from drying out but the chilli will not need much water and definitely no feed. We will keep the chilli plant above 7 degrees celsius but out of direct sunlight until the spring. If the chilli plant has survived we will water and feed it as the new growth forms when the weather warms up.

I pulled out mine at the allotment as thought they would just die off and I’d start again next year with new seeds. Saw a couple of people talking about overwintering them, so kept one to try. Very informative video, I will give it a go. Here’s to the Spring to see how it looks. Thank you
