Very impressed with your parsnip germination I usually have huge gaps.
Just to say I am so excited because I have just been given an allotment in South London. I waited for about 3 years and now at last I have one. Thanks so much for all the tips. It looks quite a daunting task, but I am taking your advice to take one step at a time and also to just 'whack them in.' It's all very new, but thanks to you I am learning so much.
Love Mercia
I would pot the dahlias up and let them grow before planting or the slugs and snails will dine in style for a while as the tubers begin to put out new shoots
If you buy a pair of hanging basket brackets you could screw them into some fairly solid wood In your shed and use some old laminate flooring boards or some thin wood to make a shelf placing the boards across the 2 brackets (i usually drill a hole and secure with a nut and bolt) and then sow some seeds in fruit and vegetable or mushroom tubs and put them up on the shelf youve made in the shed and plant them out as soon as they are big enough .Also if you push a bamboo cane or a long pole through the swirly bits underneath the hanging basket you make a hanging rail where you can hang up your tools using S hooks or butchers hooks .I find the white plastic ones off the hanging displays in poundland that fall on the floor as people pull the packets off the display and I gather them up and use those to hang things up .Poundland just sweep them up and throw them away .They are just white plastic S shape pieces on the vertical card that holds packets of things like corn nuts or pork scratchings
Are those nettles in the GH ? 15:46 at the back?
Dahlias are very susceptible to frosts, last year in Essex I first potted them up at end of April and planted them out of pots in the ground first week of June pinching out the tips after planting to make bushier plants. This way it will reduce the chance of the slugs eating all the new growth, when you plant them directly into the ground. Slugs like new growth thats why they don’t eat grass dandelions etc 😉Due to the weight of the flowers and stems Dahlias need substantial supports. Unfortunately I lost them all to frost in Oct, got them out of ground and into shed but the frost still got to them. This year going to cut them down before frost, leaving the tubers in the ground with a heavy mulch.
As others have said it’s the roots of the peas as they grow which keeps them together. When removing peas from guttering you don’t bang the guttering on the ground, you place an end of guttering at far end of trench then push the length of peas onto the ground with one hand whilst gradually removing the gutter with the other hand.
Hi Emma, start your Dahlias off in pots then plant out. Good luck.
Re the raspberries, other way around. Summer fruiting raspberries produce fruit on last year's canes (floricanes) and you have to cut back old canes and keep new canes for next season; autumn fruiting raspberries produce fruit on this year's canes (primocanes) and all the canes can be cut back in winter.
I found a Dahlia plant last year on the hight street in Tooting Broadway, around the end of July. No idea what a Dahlia was and didn't bother to look until I planted it in the ground after 2 months, it grew into the most beautiful plant. Eventually killed by the December frost. I think I was too late in my attempts to rescue the tuber. Now, I have 9 Dahlia's all grown from seed. They're so big now I NEED the last frost to hurry up so I can free up my kitchen table of all these seedlings.
Yes that wasn't realistic at all lol. I think the roots will help as they are joined together.. Just move the netting lol it's easier then moving the peas. I think peas can be planted closer together as well as your broad beans so you can save space or just get a lot more x
I always ask the same question about the slugs and snails why can't they stay on the grass eat as much as they like just leave our plants alone I don't even have a big area to plant more than what I need, love your video today as always
Ms Emma, invest in some tools so you can become the better gardener…..love your work…..
Get a magnet on a pole and run it over the area you dropped the screws. Will get them for you…..hubby swears by this…..
Did you moisten the soil before you transferred the peas?
Emma, the peas will weave themselves through the netting.
You’re a real gem Emma! Thank you for being so inspiring. Happy to have found you from Nova Scotia 🇨🇦I’m a happy new subscriber.
I made a rock for snails. It´s called doom of snails. There i´ll smash them.
Hello Emma, You are correct, if you tape off each end of the gutter, fill with compost, sow lots of pea seeds, the roots grow so thick they slid out. (Before trying to slide the peas out, loosen the roots so it slides out easily). I never put drainage holes in mine, the peas aren't in there long enough to need drainage. Love watching!
I may have to give the pipe idea a go! I just think because they weren’t sowed in there they didn’t have much stability.
im such a noob at gardening still, hopefully someone can help, where should i put plants like tomatoes (warm loving) while they are growing before its warm enough to put them out? germinating on a windowsill, i have only a small plastic greenhouse outside, ty!
Dahlias: the best bit of gardening is experimenting! Try potting half of them at home now, and leave the other half to whack in later. See what works best for you on your land with your climate, your sun exposure, etc.! 🙂
I know naff-all about gardening really, but if there's one thing I've learned, it's that accepting 'received wisdom' is rarely the way forward. Experiment for yourself! It's the most fun bit 😀
Hi Emma it's best not put drainage holes in the drainpipe as the roots grow through the holes stopping the easy extraction of the peas. And when you sow your peas into drainpipes just put loads of peas in there they love being crowded.
25 dahlias…. You might need a new bed 😂 Get them potted up now for earlier flowers 👍
I inherited a piece of gutter with holes in it. Now I know what its for . Love your channel. 😃
At work we potted up our dahlia tubers in our heated potting shed a few weeks ago. Now I’d say 85% of them are romping away! We’re keeping them safe from the pesky land molluscs until they’re big enough to survive a unwanted nibble or two
Hi Emma, love the vlogs, I always pot up my dahlias give them a drink and put them in my greenhouse and plant them when the danger of frost is over. It gives them a good start and better chance of longer lasting flowers.
Emma, just move your netting to the other side of the pea plants 👍
Not impressed with the peas need growing from seed in the guttering will then bind together, used this method for many years does work well , don’t grow peas now not enough for the amount of room and work.Pull up your posts and move to the other side of the peas will then be on the outside, should take 2 minutes. Love your photography .
Summer raspberries grow on last year's growth. Only cut down last year's growth after fruiting. Autumn raspberries grow on this year's growth and you cut all these ones down to the ground after fruiting.
Hi Emma I’ve planted daliha bulbs today in the greenhouse to get them going will plant out probably May after last frost. Last year’s bulbs rotted away even though they had been dried and stored 😢
Hi Emma, really behind with the allotment but hoping to have a pumpkin arch this year!! Also, can I be cheeky and ask where you purchased your polytunnel from 😊
Wrong way round with the Raspberries Emma, autumn fruiting ones cut down in February & summer ones you cut back the old canes and keep the new grown ones for the next year 😊
You need to watch @JanesGrowingGarden ref Dahlias
I have a garden hack i am trying this year. In Ohio. I'm going to grow my potatoes in cardboard boxes. So much fun to experiment.
I'd pot them up even if you put them in the poly tunnel for now we could still get a frost till well into may ,it will also keep the tubers moist and plump giving them a better chance of producing a lot of flowers for you
I’ve bought Kitchen Garden magazine to read about the pumpkin arch, looking forward to growing along with you this year! You did make me giggle when you dropped the screws and blamed us for just sitting and watching, whilst we were all watching saying “be careful, don’t drop the screws!” 🤣
I've never grown dahlia flowers till this year, but I have and I'm thinking I'm gonna pot them on now before I transplant out onto my allotment plot xx
Cool video. You do make me laugh.
With reference to your raspberries, summer raspberries fruit on last year's growth, autumn raspberries fruit on this year's growth.
So prune out the previous years growth on summer raspberries and cut down all the canes to ground level in January/February for autumn raspberries. 😊
Just put your posts on the other side for the peas.
I love watching your video's. I saw a video today about putting baking soda and water in a spray bottle for slugs and snails to keep them away from your plants. Also you can eat the whole dandelion plant flower and all. Your garden looks fabulous. ❤
My snails get air miles as well!
Double check the pruning of the raspberry canes. For summer fruiting, you should see new growth from the ground, and that will be what fruits next year. If you cut down all the canes you wont get any fruit.
You have gutter strawberries that are a garden hack!
Your telling me in the security state camera's watching everything all the time they can't stop these creeps from dumping trash everywhere? Come on London do better!
Your thinking on rasburys Emma is the wrong way round
