If you have soil you think has been sprayed with roundup or such, will this composting help weaken any of it?
Hi Gary
Hi Gary, thank you for answering my email. I checked out all the big box stores, local hardware stores and online. I can't find any reasonably priced shredded hardwood. Is there a substitute? We only have soft woods in PNW.
Thank you so much, I was just looking at my containers wondering what to do with them and the dead things in them, now I know, and worms, I didn't know worms were good in the containers, im learning so much from your posts , long way to go , but I can sort all my containers now, most plants were neglected last year through me spending more time in hospital than home, hopefully I can get things slowly sorted this year, thank you so much xx
Will using granular fertilizer clog the openings of the GreenStalk hole?
I too have switched to the fabric bags for gardening its perfect! especially if your a renter. no need to dig up the land. very easy and cheap. a big tip I have is go to your local nurserys..I was able to get a whole truckload of soil for my garden for only 17.00! instead of expensive bags of soil get a truckload! they fill it for you and its really good soil! the bags all fold up and fit in a tote at the end of the year..easily able to store them if need be or leave out ,,great video
I recently bought the greenstalk leaf planter. Can you give me suggestions on the types of plants that can go in them?
I looked this up here is what I found concerning compost.
In recent studies, it has been found that newspapers can now be used for composting and mulching. In one particular study by Cornell University, it was stated that newspapers are safe to compost with although they break down slowly, the small, trace levels of toxic chemical compounds found in water or soy-based inks are of minimal toxicological concern. Studies have also been undertaken to prove that animals, mainly beef steers, which consume newspaper revealed no detectable traces of heavy metals in the blood or liver tissues. This provided further proof of that soy and water based inks do not put human or bovine health at any risks.
Caution should be given to newspapers printed on glossy paper as those inks are more likely to be petrochemical based. However not all gloss automatically signals toxic. For example the slick, colored advertisements inserted in newspapers are also in most cases done using soy-based inks, the only difference is that they are done on thicker paper and kaolin clay is used to put a gloss over the paper so photographs can be printed with sharper detail. The gloss in this case, like the ink, is not toxic and also biodegradable.
You can determine whether the ink is petrochemical based by rubbing the newspaper with your fingers and seeing if a dark film appears on your fingers. If you hold the newspaper up to the light and the colours appear brighter and the black print sharper then this is soy-based ink. Some newspapers also bear the SoySeal, issued by the American Soybean Association, which is a guarantee that they use soy ink in printing and their ink meets certain established standards. If in doubt, do not hesitate to call your local newspaper and ask about the kind of ink they use. Research is always important in ensuring safety but in most cases, newspaper ink these days are soy or water based inks and totally safe.
A great way for carbons without waiting till the leaves fall. Over a year your newspapers and grass clippings plus your kitchen scraps will make a fine compost.
I'm on the 3rd floor of an apartment building and purchased a greenstalk. My patio faces Southwest. It gets really windy up here. How do I secure my greenstalk planter so it doesn't blow or tip over especially during storms?
I used your fabric pots for the first time last year. I, too, left them out all winter, and they were fine. (I'm in the northeast. )
How long before you replace soil in containers?
You are teaching people to make this cheap mix? Have you used this mix without amending? Since lime and a decent amount of fertilizer are required. Once amended with what is needed for ph etc. Just buy bagged garden soil have used it with great success
Last year I got a truck load of mulch for free. Guys cutting local trees
How do you get worms in a root pouch? There are no holes for worms to get in. Go back to psychology
Great show.Good for everyone to see.I’ve been using cloth containers for a long time on my back deck and a user of the square foot gardening method developed by Mel Bartholomew from it’s beginning. You’re thoughts on cleaning the cloth bags which have green mold/moss on the outside and ways to tie down the plant towers from heavy winds/rains which I’m bracing for right now here in the finger lakes NY area.Could I use screw eye hooks into the plastic to help hold the planter to my deck? Any ideas to keep them from blowing down/away?Thanks so much.
Hey Gary, I can’t remember how you got the red Greenstalks. Was it a special one time thing? Or a yearly special? Or will it even be available again?
I grow only in fabric and plastic pots because I rent and have no yard. Biggest challenge for me is how much to water doing the summer to not "over water", but keeping soil moist. I put cheaper soil on the bottom and make my own soil mix for the top half. I get what's on sale, sift it and doctor it up. I also reuse old soil.
Thanks for getting me back into gardening a few years ago. Nothing like home grown maters or cukes. Radishes not bad either and some peppers
Will be adding a Green stalk to my garden this year. Was hoping to grow strawberries but wondered how to protect them over the Maine winter. Also, would love to purchase a few 20 gallon grow bags but all the shop offers is variety packs with smaller sizes that I do not need. Thank you!
Would it hurt to use a finer hardwood (almost sawdust)?
So, the perlite and vermiculite are not really needed in the containers or raised bed? I am sure I probably created this rule in my own mind, but I thought I could not be without these in a container or raised bed. I especially thought I needed it for the green stalk mix. I can feel better now when i don't always have these items in my mix. Thanks so much.
Gary my root crops directed seeded (radishes, beets, parsnips) in my raised beds have small circular holes in the cotyledon leaves and some in the true leaves. At this time of year (zone 7a) could it be slugs? I tossed some handfuls of slug bait around the garden, I may have to throw more in raised beds. Could it be another bug?
Another awesome video, I don’t see the red green stalk like you have🤔was this a one time special color 😊
Hahaha, your compost bins have more space than the space I have to grow in!
