In Kiruna, Sweden there is a huge risk of sink holes as they have been mining minerals right underneeth the city, and the minecaves may no longer be able to hold the weight of the houses above. Therefore they are in the process of moving the entire city a couple of kilometers away xD so when I see sink holes I think either 1) humans have been messing around underground, or 2) there is geological activity or chambers of water/lava, weakening the ground above.
