59 weeks ago, we bought an abandoned farm in Tras-os-montes, North Portugal. We’ve built our dream house in just 3 months and now it’s time to start landscaping our Tiny home’s backyard. Landscaping the backyard was not a priority for us. But because we like to do things efficiently, we turned an ugly bramble-pulling job into 4 new rustic stone terraces.

The Rustic store terraces will at some point be part of our Portuguese Homestead food production. But now that we have chickens running around the land, the landscaping we’ll do will have to be chicken-proof. Chickens are a valuable part of our Portuguese homestead, we love to see them free-range and eat bugs. But at some point, we’ll fence the entire backyard from the chickens so we can have a breath of landscape to highlight the rustic stone terraces we made by hand.

  1. I like the rustic look of the new beds around your home.. You could also get 2 or more big containers to sit on top of the septic tank lids to hide them and add some kind of small fruit trees or fruit baring bushes or just flowers in the containers. Or maybe some kind of sculpture or statue or water feature for the birds to get water from.

  2. Good morning Sindy and Dan 😊. Again, it's just wonderful how you make use of everything around you and apart from the hard work, it's all free, hurrah!!! The beds blend in naturally with their surroundings and look so organic. I bet you've filled those beds by now, hehe😊🌱🌿πŸ₯€πŸŒΊ. We too are on bramble cutting duty next week and have a 3 metre thick hedge to cut back, it's amazing how nature reclaims the land when you're not looking. Take care ❀

  3. Hi Sindy and Dan
Thank you for the video. I love the vision you have of the deck

  4. Nice terraces, comes with hard work. For brambles, if they come out again, use weed killer and cover it with plastic, than soil and rocks. Next year remove you might be able to remove the plastic depending on herbicide, it's half life or breakdown time. Even if you remove the roots, there might be seeds left on the ground that will sprout.

  5. It seems to be very hard work with very very rewarding results. I love your videos πŸŒ·πŸŒ±πŸŒ³πŸ‹πŸ‰

  6. The stone placement in front of the house gives it a country home feeling. It's going to complement the deck you will build this year or next.
It's hard work pulling those roots, but rewarding.
    Nice video as always.

  7. Great Job πŸŽ‰ ur cracking the things ur doing.
I have spend many many hours and days removing ivory. It became my enemy for life πŸ˜‚

  8. Something about those stones arranged that way makes them look so romantic πŸ™‚

    I'm loving the vibe!

  9. Se tivessem acesso a uma pequena escavadora poderiam arrancar todas essas raízes e, ao mesmo tempo, arrancar muitas pedras que estão enterradas. Assim é um esforço enorme.

  10. Busy week! Loved watching Elroy helping! The stone beds will be gorgeous once they are filled, maybe herbs and salad as they are by your kitchen? Have a good week, Laura ❀

  11. At least Elroy can help some. So cute. Your chickens are so pretty. Wow, what a load of work you both have done. To let you know I have 3 raised beds and put some pinto beans in a week ago and they are already popping up, so far 5 have grown. It excites me. Not ever planted a garden before, will let you know how it goes. You need a hot tub now to relax in after that much work. Great job.
