Picking out seeds and planning our gardens is so much fun! But have you ever picked up a packet of seeds and been confused by the different terms listed? Here are some common ones you’ll see and what they mean!
🐝 Open-pollinated – these come from parent plants of the same variety
🍅 Heirloom – an open-pollinated variety that has been grown for several decades; reliable seeds, usually vegetables or flowers, often chosen for their flavor or appearance, that have passed down from generation to generation, within a family or community or long-standing seed companies.
🥶 Hybrid (F1) – means they have been bred from 2 separate parent plants for specific things like size, color, disease resistance, cold tolerance etc…this means they’re great for growing, but not so great for seed-saving since there is no guarantee that those traits will be passed along to the next generation.
🌼 Annual – plant completes its entire growing cycle in one season.
🌷 Perennial – plant grows and dies back every year.
📆 Days until germination – the seed sprouts…if you’ve surpassed this time by several days and not everything has sprouted, consider those “duds” and reseed if necessary.
🌱 Days until maturity – the plant is fully grown and ready for harvest (if you’re harvesting).
