Thought today I’d share a bit of a front yard update, and also a hint as to what comes next in my front cottage garden design. Make sure to share your thoughts on focal point selections for this next phase. #frontyard #gardening #gardendesign #cottagestyle

  1. We have a pondless water feature in our front yard and never get tired of sitting on our front porch and watching the parade of bird species that bathe and drink from our water feature. We used to have bird feeders, but that attracted a lot of vermin and looked messy, so we planted serviceberries, hollies, oaks and crabapples for the wildlife.

  2. A Merlot Redbud would look great in that hot corner of your house you mentioned. Its one of the more heat tolerant redbuds. First Editions also has a purple leafed Vitex called Flip Side if you’re looking for an accent shrub for that corner.

  3. I agree, something for the birds at the parlor windows would be dear. And your bench across the way, thinking you could have a quick hello chat with those passing by from there. Are you allowed to plant the "devil strip" between the sidewalk and rd.? Thought that would be lovely if you could naturalize some snow drops and a variety of narcissus.

  4. A water feature with moving water that could be heard from the seating areas would be lovely. It could serve the birds also and style wise could be natural or formal.

  5. Hi Linda, gardening greetings from Germany 🇩🇪. So much progress and so fast. Wonderful. ❤ You must be really happy. ❤️ Tete a tete daffodils are wonderful and don't forget some or some more iris reticulata for very early purple and violet vibrant impact. Birdbath sounds like a great idea. ❤️

  6. Linda
What about a water feature at the end of the path behind the new patio. Wouod be lovely to hear the water whilst you are sitting at your table and chairs. So birdbath one end and water feature other end of path.
    From Sydney, Australia. ☺️🙏🏼🇦🇺🍷🐨

  7. I love the name you choose, I think Cottage Hill sounds better to me then Hill Cottage, over all your doing a beautiful job of placement. We have a huge boxwood hedges in front of my house it hides the porch can they be trimmed down to be Even with the porch level???would that look good???

  8. I’m not sure if I like all that seating on the porch? I think only the bench on the porch will not make it look to “cluttered”. Your seating on patio is enough. Can’t wait to see this all done.

  9. Definitely consider a bird fountain with moving shallow water . The noise of water will draw many more feathered friends. And with all your trees, warblers. Definitely the way to go!

  10. Hello Linda, you mentioned "Window boxes" , I have a similar situation and wondered if you would share what you use, will they be ready made or will make them, approximate size, materials and how you make them and importantly how do you fix them to the wall ? the garden is coming together quickly now, and cannot wait to see it all planted. Looking good

  11. I loved what you mentioned Linda…a birdbath on Holly side and bench on the other side! A resting spot for a sweet container and your tools like you said! So cute! A concrete bench would be neat! You would have it tucked in just right! A fountain would be nice in the backyard for thinking time/“quiet” time. LOVE all the Boxwoods and your containers! It’s exciting to see you piece this all together!

  12. Don’t you just love listening to Linda speak. I’m always using the dictionary feature to look words up for the meaning and how to use it in a sentence!! NEVER stop learning 📚🤓

  13. I agree with you on the placement of the bird bath. On the opposite side perhaps a beautiful bird house. I think at the bottom of the hill by the three new trees you should put a book box, take on leave one type. You could share your love of literature with neighbors.

  14. Is the patio with mixed material something indicative of your area? I have not seen it before. Except at your previous property.

  15. I think a lovely statuary lady called the water lady with the water jar ,would be gorgeous there in front of the smaller tree

  16. Charleston gardens have an large urn on top of a pedestal. Or an architectural detail such as a large container or an obelisk

  17. 5:49, how about an obelisk and a couple of small flowering pots flanking it. Or even a threesome of obelisks, varying sizes.( two flanking the larger, perhaps). By the way, hearing about your Trader Joe's trips, I was close today, stopped in and now I am happily planting and also arranging some. So excited!

  18. Possible statuary on one side, then bird bath/water feature on axis, street side. Water features help quiet street noise, as you know, Linda. I'm anticipating your choices! Enjoy watching as you plant and develop your Cottage Garden!!

  19. Linda, You will work through every question you have and it will be beautiful and inviting.
Might you consider a large(ish) piece of sculpture as a focal point in the front to balance a water feature?

  20. We have an area off our deck with a bird bath and flowers around it and plants in the bird bath as well. Bird bath was thrifted because it was cracked but my hubs put in on an old brick square base. Put a small patio landscape base in there with a balanced setting to your front patio and mirror its bit. A small water feature would be nice too

  21. My husband and I had the privilege of meeting you at the 2012 Oklahoma Connoiseur Garden Tour. We had drove from Minnesota in September. I have been enjoying your videos. What I wanted to share with you is that you mentioned you might want to move your Magnolia. If your Magnolia is "Jane" she can get to be 9ft tall and as wide as 10 ft easily. Also don't be afraid to prune, prune, prune. The more prune the more flowers and the thicker the branches will become. Love your new home.
