Hi Laura and Aaron – I am in New Zealand with a fairly large garden. We planted lots of fruit trees when we moved in and similar to you we had trees just up and died in some spots. What we didn't realise was that the heavy clay pan over winter had standing water in it and was actually drowning the plants. Because of this we raised the plants slightly and planted them on a berm. My husband also dug a long ditch in front of our trees and laid it with gravel for drainage. Good luck with your arbs – I hope they make it this year!
What a fun video! I felt like I was there…..and seeing Aaron plant the "replacement & his wisdom" was wonderful!🌲🌲🌲🌲 Laura, I am so impressed with your selection of "miniatures" — will you ever consider planting a "miniature" plant garden for our desire of seeing you design a mini garden for us?
I love little evergreens. It is my mission at every visit to a nursery.
Are you gonna make the kids garden again and put the miniature nectarine in there ?
Loved seeing all the evergreens, went straight to my local nursery webpage to see what's good for my Michigan soil. Thanks for getting us excited for spring, again.
I love it when Aaron goes with you shopping for trees/plants he made the right choices on the trees and I agree with you and replace the other 2 trees to make it all look even. Can’t wait to see where you will put the shrubs you bought today.
love this
It would be the best fun unloading the trees and shrubs than it would be unloading the groceries after shopping.😅
When evergreens drop needles like those pines you showed, those needles will just fall to the ground on their own. The Vanderwolf limber pine does that.
BUT things like fern spray cypress also get brown needles on the inside and they do NOT fall off. They only make the plant as it grows look awful. I finally removed mine.
Here in Indiana, muhgo pines, scots pines and probably others, get horrid twitching greenish with dark head worms at the ends of the branches. Disgusting, just disgusting as they twitch in unison. Won't plant any of them either.
Laura, do you know when the Skinny Fit Ginkgo will be available to the public? You showcased it some time ago but I can’t find it available anywhere.
HAAAA…do you buy all of your parent's inventory? You probably clean them out. LOL!
Thank you for video., But I’m think 🤔 because you have also very clay ground like me in florida. , so.., I’m think you need make much bigger hall. And put more in soil pine tree shredded.
Hi, i love watching your videos! I watched you lifting and carrying those big pots of trees and thought you should invest on a Worx Aerocart 8 in 1 yard cart/wheelborrow/dolly. attachment that can lift those big pots so you don’t break your back😅!
Lisa Herron from Cimarron KS.
Be careful…you definitely don't want a hysterectomy too early……
Russell sneaking behind you at 24:45. Love it!!
You should wait at least another season before switching out those 2 smaller arborbvite. Planting larger specimens will only have a harder time rooting in and seems like such a waste. Your only reason, as you stated, was for the height difference. If there wasn't already a channel called the "Impatient Gardener," your channel would certainly own the name.😂
“How much is it?” LOL do you two do that tik tok gag too while shopping haha we say that like 10 times a week. When I ordered David Austin roses for my birthday, he asked “How Much Is It?” And I’m like “uhh uhh uhh they gave it to me!” Like the tik tok
Just dug up 4 arbs I had professionally installed last year. When I pulled them out, they were sitting in 1 foot of water. Hope they will survive in their new spot. Any ideas on what I can plant in that clay area? I’ve heard a willow shrub will absorb the water but how invasive are they? It will take me several years to amend the soil in that area.
…..oh NO…..the evergreen roots – dirt looked to me to be VERY DRY when Aaron removed them from their
Pots! Sure HOPE you get LOTS of deep RAIN immediately… So they start off on a good foot to spread out their roots during the Spring. Good Luck!
I had the exact same problem with ONE spot where I, too, had to replace Arborvitae three times! The conclusion we finally came to was super hard clay soil; despite the flanking Arbs doing okay. 🤔
I've always had best results with arborvitae plantings following three easy steps in my zone 3 to 4 gardening.
Dig wide to allow plenty of extra space for the root ball….give it room to establish itself. Fill the hole with water and let it drain before placing the tree. Toss in organic matter with with the garden soil when refilling the whole.
For first 2 to 3 months water regularly. Cedars are thirsty plants and do best with the extra attention to moisture levels while establishing theirroot system. Hope this helps….you have guided me so many times with your videos…..feels good to return the favor.
The Flavor Top nectarines is an absolute winner! Three years after planting a 2yr bare root tree we got our first of a yearly bumper crop of fruit. Fruit ripens later in the year than peaches, late August mostly early September in zone 5b. In our area we must spray for thrips with spinosad ( Captain Jack's Dead bug juice) at late winter dormancy to prevent thrips from destroying the fruit at ovary swell during pollination. Once the tree is in full bloom its too late, no amount of spraying can get thrips deep inside the bud. Thrips mostly suck on juices of flower petals so are most devastating during blossom stage where they opportunistically chew on the outer skin of the tiny forming fruit inside the flower, stunting, russetting and desecating the fruit until around marble size, the fruit falls off. Spinosad is organic agriculture approved & is applied only once before fruit formation so its not a presence at harvest.
I’m with you Laura. Aaron needs to replace those two little trees with the taller ones.
loving that vanderwolf lollypop wow so pretty … the standard evergreen version is nice too and that jacobson that gets 3 feet is really cool too…never seen some of these especially that golden arb you showed @ 11:47 mins oh and that vaerigated pine at 13:30 mins is amazing!…loving your choices 🙂
Andrews has such a great collection of unique evergreens!
Im looking for 2 nectarines to complete my orchard area for this year
I am sure the builder is saying to prospective new home buyers, "And you have MATURE landscaping at the back of your lot. And a park (just that it is on Laura's property, but you get the benefit of it)" haha
I love your parent's garden center. It is just awesome. Your arborvitae are looking good. I love the new evergreens
Okay, be honest: does Aaron really like doing gardening projects or would he prefer to just deal with the grass and leave all the other stuff to Laura?
He looks like he doesn't really seem to enjoy it as much as Laura does.
What do you know about cedar apple rust? I only recently heard of it and heard that it effects roses as well apples and crap apples. And it is caused by junipers?
So much variety to choose from! You are very fortunate 😊
There stunted bc they are basically planted in a clay pot in the ground and are likely being drowned. As all the water runs off the hard undisturbed clay to the disturbed hole filling with water and rotting the roots. Hence with clay the 3-4times the width rule and leave it elevated an 1in or so
I’m curious if the ground under your problematic arbs was once a livestock area or unimproved roadway, maybe heavy trucks or equipment drove over it repeatedly? Just some thoughts 💭
love evergreen that your husband planted they look great In there spot those little ones sure looked out of place If you ask me
Living in the Northeast, I always think of fir/spruce/pine as a WAY back of the garden plant, and juniper up front when you can find the prostrate ones…I'll be reading plant tags much differently this year so that I can add the dwarf varieties as a more front and forward presence. You really do see the holes when the perennials fade, and it will be so nice to have that 4th act during Winter to anchor the garden. Great video!
What a fun day plant shopping together! Has Aaron always loved gardens and landscapes? Or was that something that rubbed off on him over time? 😄
So when something is a Zone 2 or 3, for instance, how do you know if it's an option in Zone 9A? Google?? 😅
Will u plant the new Arb's in lots of compost instead of the native soil ? the soil there might not be good? Maybe a bigger hole and loads of compost?
Okay, you can call those little “cinnamon” shrubs whatever you want. They would make me crazy in my landscape as they would always look half dead to me. Why not variegate with white or cream. No brown. Come on.
Te Amo Laura Hi From México 🤗🌸
Will you try to refurbish the stunted arbs?
Enjoyed your video 🎉
I need some evergreens in my landscape so I was happy to follow you around the garden center today!
Ground 🐀🐀🐀🐀
I would love to know how you and Aaron met. You both have such a true love of plants and designing. Your relationship seems so sweet; you are a joy to watch.
You usually plant in bulk
Great video🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩😁
