You can cut your larger potatoes in half or even into quarters. The key is to keep some potato eyes on each cut and to let the cut form a scab by letting them dry for 3-5 days. This is a great way to grow more potatoes.

This is appropriate timing. I have potatoes on my mind! Thanks Gary! Do you have a few favorite sources for red and blue seed potatoes?

When do you recommend for Zone 8?
I didn't know you can plant cut potatoes, this is genious! Does it work with other root vegetables too?
Thanks for the video I am doing my grocery store potatoes now, they have already chitted and some I will cut and some plant whole, while they are scabbing over indoors do you cover them or let them be exposed to the air and indoor lights, same question for the whole ones waiting to be planted out do they need to remain covered. thankyou again 🙂
Beautiful Home!!! Well here in Vermont we are getting a snow storm (go figure). I’d like to do potatoes this year. Obviously it will be a bit before I can get to the garden. Question: if I get potatoes now and prepare them for planting, would it be too early? I’ll be able to plant out in containers mid/early May. Thanks!😊
I've only tried growing potatoes once during a very rainy season with no success. Foliage was beautiful but very disappointing harvest. Trying it again this year😊 Would love to see cooking videos from garden harvests.
What beautiful kitchen.
I have tried pytting sweet poratoes in water, and they never put out sprouts. I also tried putting them in dirt and nothing for weeks. What do I do?
Yep, got mine done last week!!! ❤️Kacy
Ah, I put mine in the ground directly after cutting, is there a huge risk of rot if you don't cure them first?
Great reminder for me to cut mine. Thanks 🥔
Just bought my potatoes today, this video is perfect! I'm in zone 4 but have a greenhouse, can I put them in the container I'll be growing them in now?
I cut mine and placed out to dry last night.
Should you wait until they have started to sprout or does it matter?
impressed by your video
Tony at Simplify Gardening says to allow only one or two eyes to sprout for larger potatoes. I did that 2 years ago and he was right. Last year had a bunch of life get in the way of chitting potatoes and I winged it, Just planted my potatoes and got a crappy harvest. The jumping worms may have also played a role, @#$%^&*(!!!
Started chitting my potatoes about 4 weeks ago, to go into the garden late April. Going to take out eyes on some and leave the rest alone to see if it makes a difference.
Enjoy your videos! Stay Well!!!
Greetings from arizona zone 9B! thanks again for all the tips and tricks for planting our potatoes! Cheers 🍷
Gary your teaching me so much I just want to thank you again. And your kitchen is beautiful 😀😀
Gary, thank you for sharing. I tried potatoes last year (Maryland, Zone 7) and got hooked. I look forward to seeing your method of planting these potatoes this weekend so I can mirror your method. Crazy to think we can plant anything this weekend after the crazy wind today! Take care.
Gary, when do potatoes get planted to be ready for winter storage? (6b)Thank you for all the great content.
do you plant them in March (for Md)?
thanks
Charcoal / wood ash also works great instead of sulfur.
mmmm…Yukon Gold – best mashed potatoes!! Thanks for the tutorial – looking forward to watching them grow. Beautiful house, by the way, and gorgeous kitchen. Question, if it's not too nosy: is the floor in the kitchen real hardwood, or a laminate or vinyl plank? Curious because I need to make some decisions. If it's not hardwood, are you satisfied with its strength and performance? It sure is beautiful. I love light wood and white walls. Crisp, clean, refreshing. Thank you!
