What is the best way to avoid cracking the tile? Would a piece of wood with thin-set and tile buttering be enough?

It is nice to see how your skills develop over time, but you have to be careful here! Welding isnยดt as easy as it looks.
If you are making just some points/dots, you will NOT get the complete sturdiness from the welded joint. Please be carefull here, the steal doesnยดt get hot enough to form a strong joint.
Furthermore to avoid possible cracks in the tile you could get 12-19mm plywood, and screw the wood to the crossbars (prevent bending wood), before laying down the tile (with interlayer).
Besides these hints you made a wonderful job! The table looks really beautiful, you can be proud of yourself!
