Another amazing project. I’d do a fountain in the middle because you could hear it from the fireplace and have it lit up at night.
I would put the circle in and live with it sit out there and decide what you are missing to make it the ideal space.
Great plans and good looking gardens ahead!
Love the idea of a fountain in the middle, what about using the stone you cut off the step and make it into a circle for a base to the fountain? It would continue the look of the rock and give the fountain more elevation.
Monrovia grows "Green Tower Boxwoods." Have many in windy zone 9b. Slow growing, trim to shape once a year. Get the 3ft size for best start in winds!! Awesome at 5-6ft.
I agree with Aron. Put brick in the center until you find the fountain you want then cut circle. I think the new space should be consistently scaled down from Harley garden.
Outline patio area with same brick as around Hartley then lay brick inside the out line….?
🟧Go Laura, it's your spray day. Go Laura, it's your paint day! 🔶
Good morning Laura and family
Oh my I'm excited for you all. I just can't visualizing the pound in the center of the circle patio sorry. Love how you and Aaron put your heads together and make it happen, my husband and I we're like that even finishing each other's sentences lol. And your mom helping out. Can't wait to see the progress happening. (Where did you find your beautiful coffee mugs?) Ask your mom where did she get her coat love that also lol.
Thank you for sharing, have a wonderful rest of the day and weekend stay warm. 👋🙂
It’s Aron’s house too
Good morning Laura and mom. This mornings video was a treat. I love the planning phase of any project and I love your videos with your mom. Laura you truly are blessed to have Aaron. His foresight is excellent. While everything is tore up you may think about running electrical to the corners, where the pillars will be and the surrounding flowerbeds for landscape lighting. Just in the off chance you want to either put lights on the pillars or do uplighting of trees or other such things. I love the idea of a cutout in the middle of the patio and the boxwood hedging. I know a fountain would be beautiful there. You don’t want to obstruct the view of the Hartley either, but as hot dry and windy as it gets there I’m thinking a big beautiful tree planted right in the center. It could be limbed up to allow for views of all surrounding features. It could be a tree with deep roots so no lifting of bricks would happen. Anyway, take it from someone who has a very hot, dry, no shade patio where the wind blows so much that an umbrella can never be used. In fact I have gone through several umbrellas. Shade structures get destroyed also. My next option is building a large heavy pavilion which is costly and somewhere down the road. Meantime we don’t enjoy the patio much. Foresight would have been great, but I didn’t discover your videos until it was to late. Lol😝
If you can't get the stone to match the brick edge, you could plant thyme or even my favorite Spanish daisy. I saw an English walled garden that had the Spanish daisies between the rocks and steps. It was so lovely. Then you could just get on with it instead of cutting stone and such.
My husband and I have the same fun times when it comes to working together. Our brains also work differently. We've had some doozies over the years. I love that you have your mom to help. 😁
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻great brainstorm! It's going to look beautiful!
I am a landscaper architect have been designing gardens for over 40 years and I have had many clients, that when the first see the size of their patios are taken aback, intimidate by the scale but by the time furniture and other accessories are placed, they see how well it functions they are so please that they went along with the original design. You have the space and scale for a large patio you will not regret the larger size. It’s easier and far less expensive to furnish a larger size patio, than to extend it : you will have no retreats in the larger size. Take you lovely mother’s advice she has a great eye for design.😊
I love the idea of a fountain in the middle of the patio. Relaxing sounds as you enjoy sitting outside, kids can splash around a little bit (float some rubber duckies or boats) and it would be lovely to look at from the Hartley!
I’m confused, you already have a patio with your outdoor fireplace
I see a fountain in that space. I want to say I appreciate the realness of your videos! You've inspired us greatly on creating beautiful garden spaces. 🌱🏡
Cheddar, surveying his kingdom.
Hey Girl get some cute but nice warm boots for days like this. Love your channel!
🥰✅
Love your all season leopard print shoes!!!!
I love landscape design videos like this. I am closing on my first house later today and have big plans for the space. It is always nice to see an expert (at least in my eyes) going through the motions of hardscape and landscape design.
P.S. I think a fountain with the hartley as the backdrop would be stunning. Also the brick patio matching the gravel will make the room feel more cozy and welcoming. Kind of like one is entering a semi-secret garden area. Just my thoughts. I know anything you decide it will be georgous.
Please consider your soon to be gorgeous pink blooming tree (that's bare right now, sorry forgot the name). It is really the best show stopper in your garden in that area (hydrangeas close second). Use that established frame to enhance the "cozy surround" you are aiming for= Perhaps plant a matching tree on the chicken coop side near to the wisteria. Create a multi trunk like the older tree? The flowering trees would frame in the view to the Hartley in pink blossoms! ❤ Also, if ash coming out add a third pink blooming tree to replace it. And a 4th someplace else? The matching trees will give you a background of tall surrounding cohesion to your 4 surrounding pots with columnar evergreens. ❤
I love these hardscape videos and the your thought process. I loved your mom's input too. She is right on!
The flowerbed with the rain tree looks too narrow in some spots. I would direct the pallet walkway right in the center of the square in front of hartley, and rather move the bench. It seems akward to have walkway so close behind the bench. I wonder how it would look like if you bump the parking more closer to the walkway, dont make the swoop to the patio from the side but access it from the front where the rain tree is.
I really think you should go with a small pond in the middle! That way you have the calming water sounds, planting space for big plants and you will get the most use out of it
Definitely a fountain to help with keeping you all cool in the summer months.
Why not a flagstone path to the benches so you don't mess with the formal shape of the gravel filled area. A carport right there that matches your home (black roof, white posts) might be nice.
I agree that the gravel walk coming from the Hartley is in line going into the new area because then your eye view is not interrupted by a widening of the gravel. The stone step is also then on the same line each side. Hope this makes sense! One room leads better into the next room too!
I love how you and your mom are like best friends . I wanted to ask you where did your mom buy her black jacket ? I love how long it is . PLease help me with that .
Laura, You are brave with that iPad! My screen would be cracked within the first 10 minutes of carrying it around without a case on it.
Would your pondless water feature fit there and pond guy can come back and help you with it? I like the idea of a low feature to start better than a high feature such as fountain or tree.
First thought is a little pond. Or a lighted fountain with plants around. Or all of the above
I am curious to know with all the construction that you love to do why have you not built a covering or a pergola over the area that you park your trucks to protect them from the summer heat and Winter snow? I am picturing in my head something beautiful like matching brick waist high and big chunky wood over the top.
ohhh i would put a water fountain there ..
Love that you share your designs and decisions with your viewers.
I personally think a different design is exciting to the eye. The same design might take away from the Hartley design. Which is beautiful!
Great job Laura…nice design! What a nice space. On the transition near the rocking benches… Perhaps layout some loose bricks, and add some tall empty pots to the corners to mimic the columns! Try it on!❤
Yes, a circular form of boxwood hedges would be beautiful! Hey, don't you think you need a cozy nice gas fire table for roasting marshmallows in one of these spots?
Laura & her mom are family goals 🙏💖☺️
If I move to Ontario can I hire your mom to help make landscape decisions? We are so done with the crazy extremists that live near Portland. I just want to be around people who know it's bad to sterilize their kids. It's cult city here.
I think you should put in a fountain with lights. Then surround with plants.
I would put a fire pit in that circle!
What do you think about mirroring the brick and gravel from the Hartley walkway, on the new walkway that meets up to the brick patio. That way it would just match on both tiers and it won't look out of place. Just an idea😁
I would do the fountain considering you said youre doing a large cottage style bed in the same area. Not to mention the view from the hartley or the sound of water 🙂
I would do a fountain with that Hartley in the background 🤌
💚 💜 projects, music to my ears!!
I love the relationship you have with your mom. She seems so nice and mellow and easy going. She talks to softly as well.
I immediately had to Google pleached tree. Very cool 👍
Loved that about you and your Mom. Our family _Same.😁❤️
