  1. Note to self, clip the onion leaf because each leaf is a layer on an onion. I have a day off from work today and what video I watch, yours. Welcome back, Kaye!!

  2. I just learned something as I have onion seedlings in my spare bedroom's South window. Will do this. Many thanks. Supposed to snow lightly here tomorrow. We will be in the low 40s another couple of days then 50s for a week or two during the days.

  3. Good morning Kaye new subscriber here! Happy I found your channel… You are so sweet and very relaxing to watch! Nice information as well 😇😇😇👍👍👍 Liz from California

  4. Looks like your onions are off to a great start but as we all know that is just the beginning. I'm growing mostly red varieties this year as I seem to grow just enough to eat during the season. I'm going to try succession planting which is more work tracking progress but they won't all mature at once. Wishing you a blessed day always!

  5. Always a good day when I learn something new! I never had luck growing onions to a large size, even when starting from seed. I did not know the leaf per layer situation. It's kind of like corn, where each silk creates one kernel. A few missing kernels on an ear just means a few silks did not have pollen fall on them.

  6. That's a good start! They look really healthy, Kaye! Onions need light, nitrogen and water – You might want to put them under a 5k lumen daylight LED shop light until you can put them outside in the sun.

  7. I love onions. I have a lot of them growing and I grow all year around. Nice 👍 video for people. Thank you so much….Everyone should already be growing a garden ASAP. You have a great week.

  8. That's a great tip Kaye! Not something people normally are aware while growing onions. Thank you very much and keep them tips coming. 🙏

  9. A wet toothpick can also be used to pick up just one or two small seeds at a time. I'm eager to see how your long day onions will do in our zone 7. I hope you can get big bulbs from the Walla Walla! I've got to find the motivation to get out and get more done. My joints and my back has suffered this winter though. I am so looking forward to sitting in the warmth of the sun!

  10. From what I understand I should clip them 3x. once at this stage then at 12 inches and once more to keep them at 12 inches or so. Then let mature and let the leaves droop?

  11. Top of the morning to you Kaye. They're looking good for sure. Had no idea that each leaf represented a layer on the bulb. I'm making an attempt at growing garlic for the first time, coming up nicely in the pot so far. Hopefully, they survive until I can get them in the ground which won't be till around May or thereabouts to avoid the possibility of frost.
That used to be in late May, but now since the weather has changed so much, probably safe for the early part of the month. We're covered in snow here in this part of Southern Ontario at present. (Out with the neighbors shoveling this morning).
As always, thoroughly enjoying the videos.
    Have a great day.

  12. Well SO happy to learn this. I just started my lil inside "greenhouse" and I planted 4 types of onions I think because I've NEVER had good luck with onions!!

  14. Okay, something is amiss with my onions that I planted. They are not standing at attention like yours are , Kaye. They are all flopped over. ( I did grow mine by a window and now I know why they flopped over. ) Can I still snip the tops or should I start over? I usually buy the onion bundles but you encouraged me to start my own this year. Going to start another flat or two of seeds today. Thanks for the information, Kaye!

  15. Who knew?

Here I sit with a degree in Botany, thinking I know so much and YOU come along and shoe me something I KNEW, bit never put into practice.
Thanks. I learned something new today.

  16. Hi Kaye, Mixed reviews on the clipping onion greens. Many professional growers say not to trim because they need that green to have energy to bulb. I am SO JEALOUS of your ONIONS!!!! I am having no luck with germination. How long did it take to germinate? I had nice size onions last season but I purchased onion starts. Please let me know how long for germination and if you used a heat mat. A video on your process would have been awesome!

  17. Miss Kaye. I would like to have one of your Late Bloomer coffee cups 😊
