Let’s begin! The cottage’s garden design on paper is starting to happen in reality. Starting with the good garden bones I want for both garden interest AND privacy. Let’s plant some trees, put up some fence trellis, and talk about some issues down the line. #gardendesign #cottagegarden #englishgarden #cottage #trees

I had an October Glory Maple , I enjoyed for many years. It is a beautiful tree and the Autumn colouring is perfect. Not sure why it started to die out. I think one thing could have been the lack of watering in the fall. I am in zone 4 to 5. The replacement tree has been a Kentucky Coffee tree. I will make sure in August to start watering this tree earlier, as I have been gardening here in this zone for years, which I've learned a few tricks about what I need to adhere to. August can be windy and dry which makes the leaves dry out. It has grown into a beautiful tree, with wonderful shade. The only drawback is some small branches will fall to the ground and need to be rake up and use it as mulch for other areas. Also it's a male tree but a female tree produces pods which the pioneers used to make coffee.
I am enjoying the progressive attitude about the move and embracing the future. I too, will be down-sizing my home. Excited about the up sizing the yard. I have a goat, Mr. Meigge. Planning on having the Amish make a cart for him to pull with my supplies. My place is being called the "Cottage."
Perhaps a faux awning over the phantom door that would allow the rose to grow through it, if the preservation rules would allow
Linda, I bought two of those LED lamps and they saved us two weeks ago when we had an ice storm in Austin and no electricity. Mine last quite a while when fully charged.
Love the lattice
Any plans on painting the brick exterior of the house?
Lovely to see your new trees settling in and decor items finding their place. Can't wait for the next update.
About your bar station in the kitchen: you can use Command Velcros for picture frames and attach it to the tile. It is highly used and very safe. Works wonderfully!
things are really looking good
Linda, I am thinking the samples that came with your runner are examples of companion rugs that would coordinate well in your other rooms. Just a guess.
Also in an historic district and I have a phantom garage door as the single garage had previously been converted to a bedroom.
Concrete can be "tinted" by adding pigment to the mix. Perhaps a tint could "age" it.
The segment you did on planting the trees was excellent! Such good step by step explanation by you and Kayla. Could you consider making this segment a stand-alone video? I know it'd be a lot of work, but I learned a lot & didn't know this info was contained in your longer video. Also, you're practical advice about the cost of the tree, your design goals, and your personal outlook (you'd like to see the trees mature) are such good things for viewers to think about.
Solution for side walk cracks. My friend had the concrete cut away about 3 inches away on either side of the crack and put mosaic pebbles in the wavy design left by the removed area. The pebbles look already weathered and very organic. They are cemented in so they are stable.
Love your new home and all that entails!! When we are in Oklahoma, again, we are definitely going to do a "drive by". Yea!
I love that you are guiding us through a n landscape. It's an inspiration to those of us who are dealing with developing a garden. Thanks
I love the imperfections on the concrete. There is something almost comforting, interesting about those quirky imperfections. The lived in, aged character that brings beauty to your fabulous new cottage.I have to watch all of ur videos.I am very invested to c the beauty u bring to ur new neighborhood.Great job Stewart🎥
Curious about the grass area where the trees were planted. Is this not a part that the city is responsible for to replant trees that died?
We all know Stuart's voice but not his face. Please show us sometime
Could you use the side steps to the faux door as “shelves” to display your wonderful plants in pots?
I’m sorry if I’ve missed it, but do you have a garage? Is that the brick building that we see glimpses of in the back yard?
Linda, it all looks amazing…the trees, the fence, the porch, the kitchen! I love it!! The bench looks perfect on your porch mirroring those gorgeous windows! Well done!
Loved the info about square hole for tree planting & lattice addition.Would historical preservation allow for stamped concrete for walkway placement?
About the cracks in the sidewalk, I think a solution would be to enlarge the cracks keeping the curves and fill area with your peddles and maybe a little ground cover.
An idea that came to mind about your walkway is to cover it with….your favorite gravel…just a thought and you can spend the money on more plants 😉
I like the concrete ledges the way they are personally. It's the style in the midwest
Thank you! That was the best educational video on planting the trees and also planning a fresh new landscape. Can’t wait for the next one. BTW, I completely agree with you on where the coffee station should be. 😊
Wow! Great info on the tree planting
I bet we should do this with everything 😮
So enjoying the progress on your new home and garden, everything is going to be beautiful! Thank you for letting us go along with you on this journey!
Linda you can use vinegar and or baking soda for the red paint on your cement.
This was soooo good!! I LOVED hearing all the great tips about tree planting and care. I will be showing this to my "Hubs" as well! Just planting those beautiful trees has added more charm to your already charming home! This "garden and home decor" adventure is just WONDERFUL! LOVE the rug!! Sending love and blessings your way!
I just purchased a home in Claremont California . It’s in a tree living neighborhood. I have four oak trees and I’m struggling to find a landscape designer to come out a give estimate for planting:(
Love everything your doing, could put a link for the runner you just brought. Love it.
We ♥️ Stewart!
300 for that tree?? , that’s very cheap , in our area it would be closer to a 1000 , . That’s a good purchase in my opinion. Shoutout to my Hispanic people as well. 👍🏼
Someone answered what the rug pieces are – in the business we call them "strike-offs" and as stated correctly you take them with you to color match upholstery, art, drapes, paint, etc.
You can always have your light switch plates custom painted by an artist to match your tile – in any space or room. When I worked for a high-end designer we did this all the time.
I thought that side door was a "phantom" door as I did not see it in what should have been your primary bedroom/bath. I like it and love your workaround for it – plant around it!
Also love your trick for hiding chipped and cracked concrete – plant around it! That's why you are the idea lady and the brains of this outfit…LOL!
I was quite enthralled with the proper tree planting by Kayla and really appreciated her presentation. For the size of those trees I thought the pricing was very reasonable. The new trees are happy!!
Fence looks great, and new neighbors, hold onto your hats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful!
A climbing rose on a trellis over your phantom door would be a quintessential cottage look. Love the sturdy lattice topper on the fence!
How about green moss in the sidewalk cracks ?
I just saw a video of your old house and how the fence was taken down between the back yard and garage and how the potage was all torn up. I was so sad to see all these changes. With the fence being gone now they can sit and look at the garage. Not a good view and the potage plantings all gone in my opinion was a crime. I get that it’s someone else’s property now and not everyone wants to keep things the same way or do all the upkeep on it but to buy your house and not keep that potage is just so sad. 😢
Just love your channel and this new house project is so much fun to watch. Thank you for answering the mystery side door question. I’m not sure if I’ve missed something but do you have a back entrance to garage? Also I am wondering what the back of the house looks like from the backyard? Can Stewart pan the camera around that way! 😊
Speaking of the climbing roses, could you maybe build a narrow arbor for those to climb, maybe the historic district would be ok with that.? Just hit me when I seen the entire house in a shot, it would be so sweet with a thatch roof, hardly think that would pass the historic district.
Thanks for letting me know who Stuart is… Was wondering if he was your son. You are doing a great job with the design and explaining.
I just love the way everything's coming together and your personality helps a lot to knowing the people that you know they're friends and they love to help you I just love that about you!
Do you not have a driveway? Do you have to park on the street and carry your groceries in? As someone with a bad back who just had both knees replaced who also has a husband with severe COPD I'm always concerned about ease of access. It seems there are steps and quite a distance to all entrances/exits.
I like cracks in the sidewalk and flaws. It's not a brand new home. It's an old home in an historic district. Those things give it character as long as they aren't a safety hazard.
That lattice addition to the backyard fence was a fantastic idea. It absolutely matches the front windows and really does look more and more like your home. It truly looks wonderful! 😍
I watched another youtube channel and they used "Elephant Snot" to remove graffiti paint, it might work.. love the new home.
Find a local artist to paint a faux flagstone on your front walkway. It's a quick fix for the time being.
The square hole for the trees makes perfect sense.
Loved watching the planting!
Maple trees get huge and will ruin your sidewalk.
