In This video I’m going to give you an update on the cottage garden. Plus I’m going to talk about the one plant that got me hooked on gardening. DAHLIAS! I’ll show you how to get started with dahlias as well as talk about the sizes, colors and forms.

Do Dahlia attract hummingbird? I want to grow a few things they like..I’m thinking Fuchsia, Bee Balm, Salvia..should I include Dahlia?
The info on the dahlias is interesting. I think here with our clay soil I would have to do raised bed or pots if I grew dahlias.
Bryan – check out YT Joseph Carter and his minks site. Latest vid in a pheasant farm shows rat burrows – (as I have said the same as your burrows – not gopher burrows). You will see what I mean – and then how to deal with tree or field rats – not gophers eating up your fruit trees.
I live in Southern Ontario, Canada. Our winters are cold. I grow dahlias in my front yard instead of the lawn. One day before the first frost, I cut the flowers and bunch them into bouquets and give them away to neighbours and passers by. Then I dig out the tubers and store them in Yard Waste paper bags. I put in several, alternating layers of peat moss and tubers and keep the bags in the garage. In the spring, I divide some of the of the bigger clumps of tubers and share them with neighbours. I educate them how to care for them and remind them to dead head them twice a week. I love the ball dahlias. People stop to take photos of them. I caught one woman touching it to see if it's real or fake. They look so perfect. Most of my dahlias are from Costco. The bees love them. They actually sleep in them.
You've definitely inspired me to grow my first dahlia, Brian! Thanks for the video.
Yes, I'm inspired. I have a very few dahlias, but I'm reminded that this is a very beautiful flower that can so easily be grown in our zone, so I shouldn't whine about some of the flowers I can't grow (ie Peonies) and focus on those that I can. Thanks for the reminder.
Looking forward to growing some dahlias. Will the gophers eat them?
Grew my first Dalhia last year. They are soo beautiful. Thanks for the info
Does it work for all zones now, even if it is still cold
They grow very easily in east Africa i didn't see pom pom kind though
Dahlia's are gorgeous but seem a bit intimidating. I'll have to look into how well they would do in zone 7b without digging them up over winter.
I bought two "grocery store" dahlias last year. And you're right, with VERY little effort , they BLOOMED. Currently they are dormant, maybe I'll divide them and place them some place a little more practical. 🙂
Great video! I learned a lot and had always thought they were hard to grow…..soooooo, off to the stores and catalogs I go again! lol Gee, thanks! lolol just kidding. I've wanted to add more flowers so this will be the year! Curious, can you grow them in pots? If so, what do I need to do that? Thank you again!
I ordered 6 Dahlias this past fall. I cannot wait to get them! I was bummed when I saw the Dahlia tubers at Costco to weeks ago for a fraction of what I paid for 6. Here's to the start of my Dahlia adventure!
I bought about 200.00 worth of dahlias from Michigan Bulb and Holland bulb company. I live in Southern Louisiana. I managed to rot every single one of them out of the ground. I'm taking a year off before I try again.
I love dahlias, but they struggle with powdery mildew in our humidity. I still grow them, though, because they are so pretty.
awesome, enjoyed learning about Dahlias!!!!
I love Dahlias. I have 28 varieties that will all grow in pots on my deck. I also grow my entire veggie garden on my deck on pots. It's a huge deck but still a challenge to have look nice. But I like growing veggies in totes with a water reservoir on the bottom.
I don't know if any of mine are named varieties. I picked up some tubers at a garage sale, and they only told me what color the flowers were not their names. I also got some from my cousin who was thinning out a patch that came with her new house. My most prolific one is a sort of mauve/wine/burgundy sort of color that is a formal decorative type.
🎉
I found a pale yellow dinner plate dahlia in Asheville, NC years ago and it was one of the most gorgeous things I've ever seen. I've grown that one ever since. I'm not sure of the name, but the blooms are sometimes as big as my head.
Most excellent vid Sir. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. Blessings from northern california!
Good info here! Dahlias are one of the prettiest flowers in my opinion. I need to give it another go after having lost my tubers to rot as I left them in the ground too long into the winter. I have a salvia in the front yard that is a show stopper. Beautiful but has a somewhat off fragrance. A mild scent but not very nice. Cheers!

Dahlias! always a favorite topic. Couldn't find the variety on the Colorado Dahlia Society's suppliers list. It was a listed variety though. The list has been an amazing resource over the years but when I was there tonight numerous links are not being generated correctly. It could be that the site's management is in decline, after all we all get older and hope that someone will continue our legacy but it doesn't always work out that way. I don't remember the gentleman's name I am reasonably sure that he was the founder of the site's Big List in the 90's but he was very enthusiastic and dedicated to the task. The list has grown in both quantity and quality since I used to refer to it.
