As much as there is success with veggie gardening, there are also errors. This year I’ve made 3 vegetables gardening mistakes that I want to share with you.
1. Planting Cabbages too Close
Cabbages need space to grow and unless you’re growing for baby leaves, they should be spaced evenly apart at least 1 foot apart. My cabbages in raised beds were far too close together and didn’t succeed as a result.
2. Right Lettuce, Right Season
It’s crucial to plant the right lettuce for the right season. This is particularly important during the summer season when the long days and high heat will make many lettuces (and similar crops) go to flower and set seed quickly. My lambs lettuce is already bolting, whereas my salad bowl red is fine. It’s very important to choose the right variety for the time of year.
3. Indoor Tomatoes
Growing tomatoes indoors can be a great way to protect them from blight but YOU MUST ALLOW POLLINATORS IN. I made the mistake of forgetting to open my greenhouse door (oops) and so many of the flowers haven’t been fertilised and won’t grow into tomatoes. Don’t make that mistake!

Thanks for stopping by the Brimwood Farm channel. We’re a teeny urban smallholding trying to grow, garden and keep livestock on a tiny residential garden. Can you be self-sufficient and make money from an urban homestead? We’re on a mission to find out.

your tomato flowers looked like the result of excessive heat. your cabbages …you might have succeeded if you were growing for leafy greens, picking every other one as needed (creating space for the rest to grow on) we all make mistakes on a yearly basis. you are not alone, mate…………….brian.
I think my Tomatoes are the same .Ones outside r doing good yet the 2 in my green house flowers have died off .Think the heat got to them .Hope u dont lose many more this season 🙂 Deb
Always good to admit and own mistakes – not only helping you to avoid them next time, but it stops us making them too. Thanks for your honesty Geoff, and keep these great videos coming. Happy gardening!
Great topics to discuss friend. I really suck at cabbages so no advice from this cabbage killer LOL! Gardening is a learning process and ever evolving and never ending. I love that you put your mistakes out there, this way I know I am not alone in the garden mistakes club 🙂
