Hello! My name is Bethany and I grow things insides and outside of my home in Chicago.

In today’s video, I’ll go over which plants I start from seed and which plants I buy for my container garden. I do not think there is a wrong or right way, this is just what works best for me!

  1. I prefer growing from seed because I like to see how it grows, and it's really interesting to see how eg. pansies grow. But they're so much easier to get from a store, so I totally get why you'd rather buy starts 🙈🙈. You should obviously consider whether the plants you're buying are sensitive to transplanting, I think zinnias don't like when you disturb their roots. Basil is really easy to grow from seed, you could try saving the seeds of the ones you buy at the store and try growing them 😊 I'm thinking of making a basil mix this year with Genovese, red Rubin, lettuce leaf, cinnamon and lemon basil 🥰😍

  2. I think my own little rule is I grow annuals and bi-annuals or whatever they're called from seed. And perrenials I buy. But there are some exceptions… I have bought a tuber thing for a dicentra which isn't the same as a full grown plant. I want to do that more often! Some of the annuals I grow from seed I do the winter sowing method..so like sweet alyssum I'm confident will grow. And that helps me free up grow light space or I'd have no room!

  3. The amount of seeds I purchased is probably much more than I bought transplants lol. 😂

  4. I do a little of both too. I always attempt to grow tomatoes, eggplant and peppers from seed, but then end up supplementing with plants from a garden center to replace the ones that don't make it lol. I have no problem growing cabbage, lettuce, radishes, cucumber and zucchini by direct sowing seeds in the garden so I don't buy those. Flowers are a mixture too. I have good luck with zinnias, marigolds, sunflowers and bachelor buttons grown from seed. The rest are bought – and yes – lots of Proven Winners lol.

  5. I usually watch early morning. I did some winter sowing just 4 jugs . here to learn more about seed starting. this will be my first time trying my hand at seeding🤞🏽

  6. I’ve only ever done direct sow method with my flower seeds. I haven’t attempted to start them indoor as I don’t have any of the items needed for that. Maybe some day. I direct sow tons of zinnias varieties, cosmos, Mexican sunflowers, larkspur, hyacinth bean and nigella. This year I will be repeating those and going to try globe amaranth, Hungarian blue poppies, black knight pincushion, scarlet runner bean and lace flower. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼 😊
