You might not be the only one smacking sprout stems with a hammer, but you are the only one I've seen on YouTube doing it so far. 👍
Hi Emma i lift & move my compost bin put the put the top at the bottom to start again ( if you know what I mean 🤣😂🤣 ) lv Irene 😘 xx
Great video Emma is lovely to see how confident your are becoming in the garden & how your channel is growing congratulations on your 15k subscribers…well done….😀your compost is amazing very light the plants will love it….one suggestion to get to the bottom is to have a second bin or halve the one you have so you can take all the top stuff off to get the bottom that way u=you start the process off with a new bin ..harvest the bottom then do the same thing again next time…😁makes compost quicker & easier too in the long run….😁 keep up the good work have a blessed week lots of love from hazel in wales…❤❤
Compost is getting there. Forget about your flaps and just take off the front panel so it can be taken on and off easily.much easier to access to turn etc. More compost bins means more compost means cash saved and mulch better compost. Loved the sprout attack, nasty things sprouts.
Hi, I'm loving your videos! I'm starting my second year in my plot and considering a polytunnel where did you get yours and would you recommend it? A guy next to me had one but it completely collapsed over winter 😩
Thank you Emma for brightening my day once again. Great show, lovely honesty and some chuckles thrown in to boot. 11/10 and looking forward to your next video.
I can't say for sure – you didn't show both ends of rhubarb properly but I feel that it is upside down… And 3cm deep means 3cm soil over it (about an inch) – and not peaking out in the frost. Another thing: rhubarb is heavy feeder. Because of its mighty leaves it needs a lot of food. So it is good that you mentioned having lots of manure there. Though they recommend some bonemeal for the roots to add when planting. And try not to pull anything out first year – it needs to establish during first year and have a good produce for next 5 years or so. If it's doing really great, it might need some split up afterwards but there is long way to go before that 🙂
Loved this vlog Emma,
You should be soooooo proud of yourself, cos I'm proud of you and grateful for your fabulous vlogs,
Maybe try to put some sort of hinged gate on you're compost bin so you can pull it open and see it from the bottom x
😳😆😆😆😆😆😆 that compost siva thing won't stand that much shaking Emma …Goodness me the legs will drop off, that l have to see lol 😂 But that compost dose look AMAZING 🌱🌱🌱💞
I don’t bash things with a hammer but I DO use a large kitchen knife and chop stalks up as finely as I can and whack them in the compost bin, but ,I always cut things at the base and leave the root ball in the ground to help the soil life. 😃😃🐝🐝🐞🐞
Great compost 😊
I think you planted it the right way up! I got a canadian red rhubarb crown from wilko about a month ago and I just noticed some green growing today! Good luck
Hi Emma. Great you are learning so much in the short time you've been gardening. Just a little advice, your rhubarb or any plant for that matter, will really struggle when planting in frosty conditions. The instructions may say between Feb to April but this is at your discretion depending on the temperature and weather.
Nice sprout plants emma. Best they tasted good. 😎
I chop mine with a spade into tiny pieces but yes we do emma. Lol
Why don’t you line your sifter with old compost bag and make it into a salad growing box, nice working height and away from the slugs ?
Yes ! That height is perfect for curing onions! and potatoes. if you had a scraper it would make fast work of processing the compost through the sieve! Smashing up the brassica stems with a hammer or old wood mallet accelerates the breaking down as it bruises the membranes, otherwise it just takes forever! Do not plant that rhubarb crown too deep. If it already is sprouting transplant to same depth in suitably enriched soil! Wait a year or two and enjoy! they like sun and lightly moist soil. you can also start from seed. great update! .
I was feeling a bit glum and you fathoming out the "rhubarb potato" had me laughing out loud! I have less knowledge than you do but just wanted to thank you for your authenticity – I love you already and will be watching more😁
I use a small hand axe to help chop up things that are a bit too big to just toss in the compost bin. I am sure smashing with a Hammer will work too. The smaller the pieces the quicker they will compost.
Hi Emma. Compost looks terrific. As for the bin, you’d find it much easier with a second one to transfer the material which isn’t ready into, continue to rot down and give you access to your compost. As for the Rhubarb. I would have planted it up at the back somewhere out of the way so that it can grow unrestricted because Rhubarb spreads and takes up a lot of room and you will have lost all that growing space in that bed. Also, it needs to be divided up every 5 years or so to keep it healthy and the roots go down mega deep. This is my experience because I made the same mistake by planting it in the wrong place and after a few years it was a nightmare to lift. It felt like I was trying to reach Australia. Keep your eye on it to watch out for the buds, just to make bobbly sure that you’ve got it the right way up. Keep up the good work. This is not criticism, I just don’t want to see you make the same mistake I made. Keep soldiering on.
These videos are actually informative and fun to watch. I love your sense of humour!
I'm planning on having a garden myself when I can afford one and following your vlogs is teaching me a lot about it. Keep up the awesome work!
😂 your so funny and we love your videos. You need to label your crops, I use cut up yoghurt or plastic milk cartons to write on what we have and put in. I write how many and the date so I know when they should be ready 🎉😊
Hello from Canada.
You are a breath of fresh air! Regarding rhubarb. I have left a broken piece of rhubarb root laying on the ground over winter (and Canada prairie winters go down to minus 40) and in the spring, voila, it started to grow. Dug a hole, chucked it in and it became another plant. Bury the top with about six inches of half done compost, and continue that ever late autumn.
Plants really just want to get growing.
Thanks again.
Rhubarb likes lots of food, it is a gross feeder. It also likes lots of water during summer. I usually have to water it most days during summer here in NZ. Worth it tho as its yummy in crumbles or with custard and icecream.
I put my brassicas stems on the bonfire and they are so tuff they refuse to burn.leeks take ages to grow like 12months so you don’t plant them out till June or July.
Sprout hammer! Brilliant idea…I’ll try that instead of cheating by dumping in our recycling bin 👍. I’ve already tried cutting into smaller pieces but the hammer looks more fun😊
that is lovely stuff, Emma! btw i always pull out the big roots, when you want to plant again they just get in the way
Emma ,every one smash thinks with hammer but not every one is brave enough to show it.
Well done with the compost. If you make a 2nd or 3rd bin, you can turn if all over from one to the other and avoid having the good compost all at the bottom of one bin. DEV
lovely looking compost, well done. its so satisfying to achieve that.
Don't harvest the rhubarb this year, give it a year to establish.
I used to chop sprout stems about 1 to 2 inch bits with spade , great fun watching keep it up
