From past experience, friends with pools always had them within easy sight of the house. It does not take too many years before moms were not needed to sit by the water every second, and being able to be both in the kitchen getting stuff done AND being able to keep an eye on the pool was essential to its use.
There is a vast difference between pools for looks in gardens and pools that are placed in convenient and safe spots for use. And yes pools ARE a lot of work and expense.
So many older houses, that have character intact, manage to have their electrical and plumbing systems modernized without "a gut job". Changing classic character to match some modern but fleeting trend is always a very unfortunate choice.
Swim at your moms. Pools are a lot of work no matter how tech they get. And the contract. Can you hear me laughing??????? I do it all and that was NOT the agreement.
Say NO Laura
I live in the hot humid south (coastal NC) and tried the amethyst verbena last year. It was great in the spring but when the hot humid days if summer set in, it just mugged out.
WHEN you build your pool, consider enclosing it. You will save $ and maintenance. Commercial sliding glass doors to open in the summer, but able to use the pool yr round. Yes on the automated care. Don't forget a fireplace and a hot tub for after work hours.
I’m glad to hear Bermuda Beach doesn’t perform fantastic in the landscape for someone else. I gave it 2 years, but I’m moving on this coming year.
I also need to spray my superbena, as the budworms are not just partial to the superbells or supertunias. I’m in KS , 6b.
Rats! I will be sorry to miss you, we are going on the 15th. Hope you enjoy the show this year and maybe one day I will get to meet you. You have been such an inspiration to me as I start a brand new garden.
How can you grow superbena in your area when it looks like they are zones 8-11? I never see this plant in the Chicago area because we are 5a like you.

Love love love your show
I’ve tried to find that no dig/mulch video from the back garden and couldn't find it!
I have a beautiful garden in Texas! I'll try to upload some footage to my channel 🙂 I have a formal/cottage-y style garden in the making with a brick walkway and all ;). Not really a xeriscape style.
I had a real chuckle, Laura, when you talked about the lack of technology at your parent's garden center.. I worked 18 years at a nursery here in Massachusetts.. all inventory done by hand, a simple cash register, and brown paper sacks for bagging up items.. maddening in some ways, but it also had a very cozy family feel as well. Thanks for a great recap as usual!!
I would prefer a skirt around the sink only and not the counter.
Lauren, Aaron and Mom any suggestions for flowering trees or shrubs in a short grow season
Lot of snow and freeze during winter time and hot in summer time. Other thing is have pumas type soil, lot of pine trees
My favorite quote of the day,
"Helen says, Who buys all this junk?", Apparently NOT you Helen. I don't know. There's a lot of people out there who like a lot of different things."

I'm going to give my two cents to your patio area between all your structures. I'd leave that area clear-no pool-using the same brick for a fairly level area with moveable furniture and pots. You can host birthday parties, and maybe one day a wedding using the level patio for tables or dance floor. You can create several seating areas and then group the furniture for a larger gathering. Flexible.
West Coast has beautiful lush gardens. I've submitted mine but it's tiny and def not a "professional garden". Realize it doesn't fit what you look for. However, we do have "lush".
Idea of the gazing ball is that you can slow down and or sit and enjoy the beautiful garden view in front of you as well as gaze at the beauty in the garden behind you (360 ish view) as well. It slows you down to take it all in – optimization of your garden sitting spot/respite.
❤
Good job on the violets Laura!!!
😂😂
Married life!! The pool house idea! Thanks for being so real and showing us how you truly love each other. ♥️
On the plant stand, when I want a specific look, I use Google images to track it down.
I don’t know why I like gazing balls lol! Guess it is the unexpected color and light reflection nestled in among the plants. I do agree with Aaron about the tree face 😳they are creepy. 😊
Miracle grow has leaf shine. I have it and use it occasionally.
$144 for the rack the plants were sitting on.
Gazing's balls were from the Victorian Era. Used in diningrooms so the butler could see on its reflection, if anyone needed anything. Also I've read that young couples, while courting, could look into each other's eyes. By looking at their reflections discretely, as they were walking through gardens. I have a blue gazing ball in my garden I've had for probably 20 years. And I love Talavera pottery balls from Mexico. They don't have any reflection though.
Bummer, blank image of sunburned Aaron and Laura.
Don’t test me! Lol
❤
I googled the gazing ball thing. Because I never understood them either. But this is one idea of their history and usage.
(Once known as “butler balls,” the reflective globe would be placed strategically on a dining room sideboard so Victorian Era servants could remain outside the room and still see when service was required. Indoor gazing balls were also used to unobtrusively chaperone young couples during courtship.)
Superbena problems! I discovered last year that where ever I had planted Whiteout Superbena next to my Stachys Lanata Lambs Ears, they shriveled back as if there is something in the Lambs Ears that was irritating or toxic! At first I thought they had bud worms, but the problem got much worse and the Superbenas pretty much died back on that side of the plant touching the Lambs Ears. I had planted this combo in several quadrants of the garden, and in every single instance, it was where they were touching each other that I had die back! Just thought I would give everyone a heads up to avoid this combination, even tho it is sooo pretty!
🥰❤️✅
To add to the historical comments to gazing balls, they also attract hummingbirds and butterflies. It's always fun to see hummingbirds see their reflection 😀
a Lagoon pool with a lazy river around your property . with a grotto inside that have a spa and wet bar with waterfalls and water slides incorporated around the falls
I get bud worms on Zonal Geraniums!🤷🏼♀️ I still plant them thanks to your channel, I just weekly spray BT.
I think a winding, grape vine covered pergola would be awesome over part of the flag stone walkway in the south garden! Especially because there isn’t much structure out there yet, it would provide some shade while the trees are all growing up, and it would help create another “room” like Laura always mentions 😊
Did you all see, Laura in a cute ponytail?? Such fantastic pictures!! Thanks for sharing! 21:38
The video volume seems less ,not complaining but i notice compared to other videos
Come to the Indianapolis Flower and Patio Show March 11-19, 2022!
I absolutely love you guys! I love your bantering and you make me laugh! ❤️🙏🏻
You two are too funny! My husband was sitting near me as I watched this today, and when you started talking about Aaron's messy desk, I just glanced over at my husband to see him chuckling, and we both cracked up laughing. This is a subject we are all too familiar with! I can't stand his messy desk!
And Aaron…. Laura DID just say that about the pool house! 😂😂😂😂
Thanks for the laughs!
