Danny. You're deemed disabled, take that paperwork to the tax office. Most states will give a break, if not nullify charging property tax.

How involved are your children (adults) and their children in the everyday operation of the homestead?
Thank you for this video about how to make money on a homestead. We are homesteaders too, maybe just behind you in age. My husband is also a "jack of all trades", but he has a full time/overtime job driving a semi-log truck in the woods at times, so you know he has nerves of steel. He can also do carpentry and build anything and everything also. I had him watch this video after I watched it and he liked it. We especially like your advice on animals and what ate you out of "house and home". We currently have 21 hens and we are getting more chicks soon. My husband also farmed his family farm for years running beef cows, but we currently do not have any cows or pigs. We might get a few pigs just for our freezer, not to sell. I so appreciate the advice you gave on raising sheep, goats, pigs and turkeys because I keep thinking we need to do that like a lot of homesteaders. I have health problems and my husband works a full time/overtime job, so we need to be wise. Long story short I am going to just stick with chickens and gardening……….just like you folks, except you have Dexter cows. We might get a few cows or a few pigs in the future. I told my husband that is his "cup of tea". I know my limits and I would have to have help with a very bad knee. Sorry this is so long, but I really like you folks, even though we are in the north, not the south, we think you both are tops. God bless you real good!!!

Thank you for the outloud thought process of having a part-time job vs take home pay! I did mine, and by the time I figured in all the costs including TAXES…I would make $7/hour with a $15/hour job. It makes more sense for me to find other revenue of income and cut more costs.

I get a military retirement once a month. For 8 years I bought 2 cases of canning jars a month. Now I have plenty. Always buy them extra lids you will need them. I’m now divorced and live in a apartment unfortunately but I still grow food in pots and support my local farmers. I also store water from empty jugs that I use and get from friends. It’s a matter of mindset. We may not be hurting to bad now, but the future is undetermined. Be ready just in case. Blessings to all.
