Linda Vater:
It’s time to bring in my interior designer friend and expert John Turman to answer more design questions. I followed his advice at almost every decision point, and could not be happier with the results! Tell me what you think.

  1. I think you could put your custom boot storage directly behind the couch. That would allow you to double duty as a sofa table for light and plant storage where you can see it while sitting. Love your taste; beautiful home.

  2. I love the way the room is coming together. Can you tell us the measurements of the room? And also can you tell me about your rug? Is it sisal or jute or seagrass or something else?

  3. The only wall in my family room that I could put my tv on is very large with an 18 ft celing. So we took multiple floating shelves, almost like chunky molding, of different sizes and hung them around the tv at all different heights and spacing. I was able to put all my antique balance toys on them. The tv literally disappeared! But that wall can handle it very well because of the height.

  4. How about instead of a standing coat rack you put up a wall peg rack, wall hooks, or maybe even a thrifted vintage accordion wall rack. That would allow that door to open further and not take up any floor space.

  5. Love the choices you made in this room! Love watching you and John talk about the placement and ideas about your new home thus far. He seems to be such a kind and sweet man. You can see the gentleness in his eyes. I think the tv placement is perfect! And great filming as always Stuart!

  6. Looking great! Thank you for taking us along! Love John’s ability to listen and make suggestions. He’s a gem!❤

  7. Just love how you & John changed the bookcases and the placement of the TV. Can't wait to see your gallery wall when it is done. Another idea would be to hang the TV on the wall as it would give you a little more room on your table. I just love gallery walls and I am sure yours is going to look stunning. John is so kind and what a joy to work with. So excited for you.

  8. Your great room furniture layout and accessorizing in looking so comfortable and welcoming! Love the fur pieces on the harvest table under the TV. Would love to sprawl out on your couch to watch TV with a roaring fire and a glass of wine. John has great taste and advice! Can't wait for his advice on the wall gallery. And, eager for his advice on the layout/usage of the front room and kitchen. Looking good. Best wishes from 36 degree zone 6 CT.

  9. Decor is a journey of the soul wanting to live a beautiful life. I’m enjoying this and I know it will be forever changing, growing and expanding .

  10. Tip for sticking or stuck wooden drawer. Once you get it open, take it out all the way and use a bar of soap and rub it on the areas that glide on each other both on the bottom of the drawer, and on the base of which the drawer moves along. It will move like butter afterwards. I have always used ivory soap bars, but I believe any kind of soap will do as long as it’s a bar of soap.

  11. I have an idea. What if you transform your garage into a studio similar to the one at your former garden? It will give you space to create videos, etc. AND give you a designated space for your collection of garden boots and other garden decor. I feel that the boots are the new 'tv saga' LOL – not to fret, there is a solution that will work for you. If I remember correctly, you didn't use your former garage for your cars, and you do live on a corner, hence more parking spaces. You did mention earlier that you might eventually have a garden shed, greenhouse, etc. So many possibilities. I feel the boots will bring in dirt and also compete with the other decor flavors in the room.

  12. For your gardening boots under the window: Thrift a vintage wood bookshelf as tall and deep as you can find but (around) 4 feet wide. Lay it ON ITS SIDE under the window.

  13. This is a great video, chronicling your adventure.
The bookshelves are phenomenal together,I want 5 sets of them for myself!
The concept of the maps and photos on that wall,a story wall,a profoundly beautiful idea. Do it! But make sure it doesn’t end up looking scrapbook-y 😂
Your impeccable taste should assure that this will not happen.
Keep up the wonderful adventure,Linda and ‘Hubbs’,we all await with baited breath!

  14. Lovely video, lovely man. The Great Room is coming together beautifully. I still have un=
opened boxes in our garage. I just gave up, no room !!

  15. Just a thought.Linda you had said you love the British cottage look.I watched your Xmas video about Mockingbird Hill. In that video you saw those botanical prints that you said you had. Those prints would be great on the wall in your kitchen and an upholstered chair or two around your kitchen table..and absolutely no bookcases flanking the tv.Also your tv looks properly placed now cause in the corner swiveling on the stand looks like the old hospital room.

  16. I meant the round table! On the swirly legs. I’d love to see a closeup on the next occasion. John is wonderful and so are you Linda. I can watch you daily and for hours. Can’t wait for spring and development of your garden. ❤

  17. As a retired Interior Designer, Jon has given you invaluable advice. I always told clients "it's your home, but I won't let you make a mistake".
TVs on above fireplaces began in Calif where there are no mantels and very low fireplaces. Doesn't translate to most homes across the US. Also TVs on walls/arms remind me of hospital rooms – ugh!
Love the idea of mud room the under window – otherwise it's wasted space. I also thought of you doing a Dutch door…
When you do new windows here, you have the opportunity to add some softness by adding dead hang drapery (stationary side panels) and a Hunter Douglas type silhouette shade – it has veins between a shade that have varying degrees of opacity. This allows you to watch a movie during the day when your family is home, or watch the big game during the day while getting rid of the glare.
When not in use, the whole thing disappears into a head rail. There are tons of color and textures to choose from. Jon can show you examples. It can be motorized like your bath shade.
I love weighing in on design, however this channel (and others) has become a dating site (not with our usual bunch) and a site for scams (we are all aware of these) and makes me not want to comment.
I was actually shouting the word "BANQUETTE" while you were touring your new kitchen a few vids ago…
    Can't wait for more!!

  18. With your Colorado connection, think about a bench made from beetle kill wood. For reasons I don’t quite know, the wood has subtle gray-blue tones in some areas of an individual piece. Gorgeous and still rustic. And it’s reusing something most of us considered “trash”.

  19. Linda, I am sure it’s on the thread but I didn’t look. What about a framed tv??? I love ours – our guests are fooled and have thought the scene was an actual painting. Sorry if I missed something-

  20. Linda!!! You have done a great job thinking through everything….and I am learning SO much while I enjoy watching you settling in…you are truly a breath of fresh air in my day! My kids say, “Are you watching Linda Vater, Mom?”🥰

  21. I am loving all of the new videos about designing your new house! Can't wait to see what you do for the garden. John is so wonderful and I think we all want to know- Hey John, when are you going to start your own Youtube Channel!?!?!?

  22. Well Linda this move certainly seems to be rejuvenating .. you look lively and young and seem like you are more relaxed and adventurous.. best wishes to you all.. I look forward to watching the coming season blossom!

  23. Hello… really love how you've re-worked the floor plan.. well done Linda with collaborative help from John.
I don't know about you Linda, but my gardening boots and shoes are usually dirty and sometime aromatic. Wondreing if it's really a good idea to do a mud-room-esque function in your family room? I'd like to suggest that you build something outside the door, maybe a lean-to greenhouse that leans up against the wall. This way you have lots of storage, a place to store gardening apparel, and a place for some of those more-tender plants, etc. Just a thought.
Hope all is going well with the sorting out your new home. It takes time for sure. Remember it doesn't need to be perfect the first time, as you will most like continue to move things from there to here, and here to there, as you did in your garden…. grin.
Sending you best wishes and happy thoughts….Linda

  24. I can’t wait to see what you do with that sweet front closet! I love watching your process of decorating and so excited to see your thought about the back garden. Love your videos.
