Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Definitely Mildly Entertaining…
In the VERY best way, my Dear Jess!
    Michigan Garden Girl 🌱

  2. You can put all the dwarfs in a section of the garden and call it "Dwarfville" for the season 😂🤣

  3. I love to watch this stuff even though tomatoes probably a few years out. I tried tomatoes in 2020 and had limited space I felt they took up so much space for so much time and they never turned red I will absolutely have to do a compact verity I am encouraged to think other people are breading and refining these verities for me and I know it might feel on the humble side but the work in the dwarf tomato breeding for home gardeners is a really big valuable step for food security. It reminds me of "what's in your hand" from the other day buying a few packets of seeds or a few starts and seed saving over and over is a very beautiful goal to be growing seed to share with apartment gardeners

  4. I grew them last year in the garden. It got about 4 feet tall and produced A LOT of little ones for munching. The family preferred the cherry tomatoes but I loved them! I ate them in the gardens all day. Can't wait to do it again!

  5. I've been growing Urulu Ochre for several years and it's one that I will never not have in my garden! Just a note about pruning…. they get WILD if you don't stay on top of pruning them!

  6. Oh gosh – I HATE Orange Hat. Terrible flavor. Tried it twice. IDK why people like it. My fave is VILMA. 2nd is Rosey Finch. In the Micro group.
Fave Dwarfs have been Boronia, Maralinga, and 'sometimes' Rosella Purple. Oh and Adelaide Festival. I've yet to try Brandy Fred.

I had an indeterminate normal cherry that blew me away – Ron's Carbon Copy (or Carbon Copy). Flavor insane and I don't like cherries as a whole

  7. I really like the Red Robin micro dwarf. It has amazing yields for such a teeny plant, and I really like the flavor. I'm growing a bunch of the micros in a greenstalk under lights right now, and they are doing great.

  8. 🍅I love talking tomatoes. 🍅
And hearing varieties I've never heard of before is delightful! Always more to explore. It never gets old. 🥰

  9. I've grown Orange Hat for the past 2 seasons. Prretty for decoration but have a thick skin and not much flavor so I won't grow them again. But looking forward to trying some other varieties that you spoke about.
Hope you have a great tomato season this year! 🍅❤

  10. Forgotten heirlooms has about 25 to 30 micro tomatoes. I bought 14 varieties n some get to 8 " up to 12" . I plan on growing in my greenstalk n my garden beds.

  11. I'll bet that the names they give plant varieties influence the sales about as much as their growth and flavor qualities! What imaginative names!

  12. Can I keep an indeterminate tomato variety smaller since I now live in an apartment…. if so how do I do this ? I have many seeds. I'm use to growing over 100 tomato plants now I can't 😭

  13. The very first tomato seeds I ever bought was from Tomatofest. I messed those seeds up lol. They did grow well. Then I stored for future plantings and then my husband put them in the hot texas garage. Needless to say germination after that was very minimal but had nothing to do with the company but newbie gardeners. The plants in that first garden grew in very arid soil. I planted them in May. Read texas so like I said. Everything wrong. I still got some tomatoes. I have ordered some of those same first tomatoes from Tomatofest and should get here today I hope. I am really excited to grow these again

  14. I grew Red Robin tomatoes last year in an 8" pot from the dollar store. My friend gave me the plant and said "oh this one isn't supposed to get more than 10 inches tall or so." They were the first tomatoes that I got to pick and eat and that little plant grew so many all summer long. The skin was definitely a little thick. My friend stuck them in a small raised bed (about the size of a window box), she put like three of the Red Robin plants there and her tomatoes were bigger. I assume that was because of the size of the container. This year I'm thinking of trying to grow a few things in a Kratky style hydroponic situation and I've heard some people are growing the Orange Hat tomato from Baker Creek that way.

  15. I grew orange hat tomatoes last year. They were awesome. I had so many tomatoes off of 4 plants. I saved seeds to grow more this year.

  16. I have a variety called Tatura dwarf. Named after the town near to where I grew up in Australia, the only reason I grew it really. It's a bush variety meant for canning or sauce which I only just realised 😅 I'm expecting to pick the first one any day. It looks perfect, not a blemish. I was taking out the suckers not realising it was determinate. I assume I probably shouldn't have, but it's a beautiful strong stemmed plant.
I just saw Tasmanian chocolate and Uluru ochre the other day. I'm considering putting in another order to get them for next season. Hello to all the other Aussies I've seen in the comments here.

  17. I'm so excited I've been waiting for your tomato videos 😍🥰 I'm growing a few dwarf varieties after having tried intedetminates in my tiny balcony garden. I will have Dwarf Nimu, Dwarf Shadow Boxing, Dwarf Peppermint stripes, Dwarf Antho Pink Panther, and micro-dwarfs: Vilma, Chiquita pot, Tomfall 😍

  18. Tomato math is worse than chicken math. Last fall I bought "a few" micro dwarf varieties, with the same purpose of filling a Greenstalk with them. In my vision, it almost looks like a Christmas tree 🙂
And I'm looking forward to growing terracottas again this year!
Hoping for a good tomato year.
