Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Feelings are what they are and there's no point in judging them. I have to accept whatever I'm feeling and sit with it until I'm ready to move on. I'm always a little surprised that when I do that, it doesn't take as long to be ready to move on as I think it will.

  2. The only reason I am ok with the downtime for the garden is because I have so many other farm projects to complete before I really get planting again. Yeah I am starting seeds right now for my last frost in February but I have a month to do the other things that I HAVE to get done. Thank goodness.

  3. I found out that my brother just turned 60, in December, has pancreatic cancer and outside of a miracle he won't live to be 61. Until this week I had planned a beautiful garden with veggies, herb's and flowers. I told my daughter I think I'm just going to grow herbs because I don't know when I'm going to have to take my Mom to see my brother. One day we're celebrating our Mom's 80th birthday, the next day we get a cancer confirmation…talk about emotions all over the place. This is a season where I know the garden will be a Haven. A place to fall apart and to just take in the beauty and know healing is coming. Garden's are places to walk with God. I'm SO glad I can watch yous grow.

  4. I’m about to make my 3rd seed order and I get it. The catalogs are such a dream and hope and curiosity to make something yourself that I can’t buy at the store. I know where and how it was grown. You are the one that got me hooked. My family only gets me gardening gifts and sweet ones. Thank you for all you have done to show people to follow their dreams. You clearly are very good at it. God bless you and yours. My granddaughter really likes Miah.

  5. Jess, you have the best attitude & outlook on everything! I’ve been so encouraged by you & your family in my venture for my first raised bed 8×4 garden! I pray your success rubs off on me! Thank you for all you do!

  6. Bought fruit trees and berry plants. Zone 8….Jan- May planting. Working the soil and amending the planting sites. Amending my vegatble beds. Got an itch to grow things……hard to wait.

  7. Thank you for this. I have been feeling this exact pain lately and I needed this message today. Your timing on this for me is God! I love you girl! Let’s keep tromping the winter, spring is coming! ❤

  8. I am so there with you! I'm about to give my 30 day notice at my job to move on to a more meaningful and less stressful job and I can't wait to get through these 30 days of storm! I know I'm going where God wants me and that is my light at the end of the tunnel, it's just hard waiting to get there

  9. Jess, even with a storm cloud over your head, you're still a ray of sunshine- bringing hope and inspiration to others. God Bless You!

  10. Thank you for being real. I'm frustrated because i am only going to be able to grow in containers. I will also have to limit growing because I don't have any good size containers. I can only afford to buy some. I was thinking about kiddie pools …would carrots be able to grow in those or would it be to shallow?

  11. Just WOW! Not only am I totally feeling just like you today, I've also been wanting to start a seed swap in my area and I saw that national seed swap day is Monday January 28! Perfect timing ☺️

  12. In MN, I am spending my time watching videos on the specific plants I plan on planting this spring. When is the best time to plant? How is the best time to start those seeds. What herbs do I need for my medicinal garden and can I grow it in my zone?

  13. I have been watching your videos for a while now. Thank you for everything you share. Very hard to find uplifting, family friendly and truth speaking social media content.

I love gardening. A big passion of mine. And I always feel the presence of my mom and Jesus with me when I am in it.

    Since my mom's passing .
My love and knowledge has grown so much more with planting.

I never had the chance to make grape jelly with her. But knowing I have memories with her picking wild blackberries in my yard with my son's and making blackberry syrup. And being able to take a picture of her in the flower garden we made together.

Thank you Jess and your family for being a light in this world.

  14. I understand how you feel. I keep pulling out my seeds and my garden plans to keep me occupied with my desire to garden when the time is not right. Our garden season will be here soon.

  15. I hear you Jess. And yes, we should allow ourselves to feel what we feel without shaming ourselves, or each other. Bless you sweet girl, you always speak to my heart. ❤

  16. I think in most things we need to give ourselves the grace to feel what we feel. It doesn't matter if it is "silly" or "dramatic". It's how we feel. Allow yourself to have the emotion. Don't live there, but give yourself the grace to feel your emotions without shame.
