I made an indoor container garden for my hamsters. It’s nice to be able to give my hamsters a little bit of fresh greens a few times a week. Their favorite seems to be green leaf lettuce. Romaine is a close second. One of the romaine plants died after 2 weeks. I think I put in too much vermiculite so there may be too much water in the soil.

Raccoons are nocturnal. The raccoon in my video was a mama at the time and she would come during the day to get some sunflower seeds from the squirrel/bird feeder. I can assume that she needed the protein for nursing her babies. She and her family come by every night as soon as it gets dark. I named her Kibbles and her daughter Bits.

This video features my Chinese hamster, Ziggy.

  1. OOoo, I love this idea! You have such a wonderful array of wildlife in your yard!! I'm sure they can be a pain sometimes, but how cool is it to have a herd of deer pass through!? Too bad about the ticks. I'm scared to death of them! Parasites, EW!!

  2. This is a lovely idea. Your little guy seemed to enjoy his green leaf, eventually 😁.
You have some amazing wildlife where you live. How lovely to have such cute visitors daily.

  3. Awesome idea Hammy time !
    I have a question though

Do syrian hamsters live in the dessert or in the grassy lands ?

  4. Going to have to do this when I move back home! It’s cooler there so I think growing lettuce like this shouldn’t pose too much a challenge😬… but then again I’m not very gifted with plants.
Here’s hoping mine will be forgiving!

  5. I know this is an old video, but how come you don’t de-pot the greens? Is it better to keep them in their little pots

  6. Do you have to replace the lettuces every spring, or does it just keep growing? I would not of thought to grow a garden inside!
