Sandhill Farm and Nursery took a beating in December after going through a very hard freeze snap that lasted about 3 days! Some trees surprised us with their hardiness actually, but we were not expecting our Market Garden to be damaged so badly, but we found out why!
Nick shows the aftermath of the freeze in this video here:

Do you cut that tall jack fruit all the way back ?
Do you grow any coconut palms ??
This property is gorgeous!
thanks for the information, I hope you are well
How did the citrus cuttings from Brooksville hold up with the cold?
Tried and true, 10 years down the toilet here.
16 & 17 degrees here in San Antonio Texas for about 4-5 days killed my star fruit trees,Barbados cherry,Turk cap, strawberry guava,Taiwanese guava, papayas with fruits they were all covered plus heavy mulch didn’t help, my lemon trees & figs, avocados have damage don’t know if they will survive. My paw paw trees, plums, apples, loquat, peach, elderberries, pear, pomegranate, jujube seem to be okay or at least still green with scratch on trunk. Pretty sad to lose my trees
I had guava trees that made it thru the last 2 freezes. I covered a lot of my things as I grow under high tunnels and they come thru fine and I am in Jacksonville area!
I’m in the same zone. Got Turks Cap Hibiscus from your nursery last Spring and planted it last November. Looking so sad now and hoping for the best! Love that beautiful Monstera and hope it’s available in your nursery this spring! Thank you for sharing your freezing experience with us!😊
Hey Pete when are you bringing back the 3 gal Red hybrids and grimals?👀 great video by the way, gives a great perspective on what’s goin on during your winters
How did you do this past weekend? (1/15)
I had icicles hanging from my banana trees 😂 my bananas now are looking about the same as yours. I’m a bit south of you in north Pinellas. Hope we don’t get to much more this winter.
Just 6 miles north of you. My baby mangoes, Kent and Nam doc Mai are doing well, also strawberry guava, 1 out of 2 Barbados, and jaboticoba did well too.
Ice cream bean tree, Pigeon pea trees and jamaican cherry appear very very unhappy. Time will tell.
Good to see you taking the roller-coaster weather in your stride, as always. Keep thriving Pete ☺
I’ve only been into plants for less than 2 years but I think Florida kind of sucks :/ like one day of cold weather you can lose years of progress and lots of $$$… not cool
Great video. Thanks for sharing! Freeze events are common here as well. We got freeze for 3 consecutive nights here in Tampa Bay Area during this Christmas. My banana plants have lost most of the leaves. Anonnas dropped their leaves. Jackfruit lost all of the flowers and most of the leaves. Some plants did better then others, depending on microclimate.
We had an awful storm up here in New York. Blew my greenhouse open. Pretty sure all of my citrus are dead, hoping for my pineapples but not hopeful.
It got down to 7* and 9* there went my collards, mustard greens, all my cold weather crops.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks this shiz is depressing. Final conclusion, I hate winter.
Gonna be a great spring though!!!!
Can wait to see the after trim
You guys got hammered and Nick said you had another one. Glad you got 30% of the market garden covered. Awesome you have some items build a bit of cold resistant. Hang on man it is going great! Your rebound is 10x faster than most people. Amazing how micro climates rock.
Thanks forthe the reality of your update.
We had record breaking temps here in Eastern Tennessee,we will not know the full extent of the damge until spring. How did the orange trees do down there?
The damage keeps showing more over the next week or so. Especially on the mango trees. I got down to 30 for a few hours with bad windstorms at my avocado farm in California. Definitely beat up my tropicals. The windstorms are by far the most damaging to my trees had winds 80mph and multiple other storms with 50-60 mph winds. Strips leaves and fruit as tree whip around for hours sometimes days
My Achacha looks okay, but I’m hoping that doesn’t change. Had some frost last night.
If the temps get low, time to turn up high and pound it! xD
Great update!
When you're pushing it, you can expect some damage. But keep pushing it!
#WhatGrowingOnBaby???
Pete, clearly the #FrostCloths are magic given this time of year…
Seems like a good investment to secure the babies from #FrostBite or as you opined: #GettingSmoked!!!
Let's pray for good weather going forward as well as a great Spring & Summer season!!!
#GodBlessYou – the family & the team…
My Turk's cap is done for the year. It got down to 12 here in zone 8b Florida. It was full of blooms.
We got single digits temps for three days. much damage . Collards burned to the ground.
Do you actually get colder than your Hardiness zone minimum temp? Are you zone 9 or 10? How close to the ocean are you? I'm in Jax, Fl, zone 9a, 1-mile from the ocean and I only got down to 26 degrees, but just 20-miles inland got down to about 23.
Pete don’t forget squirrels lose a huge percent of the macadamias nuts they bury. they grow food forests as much as you!
I agree, when I walked around my yard I did shed some tears. It was awful. 9a Panhandle. I had to mangos in ground, in a greenhouse w/ lights and they are dead all the way to the trunk. Luckily, most of my mangos are in pots and where in the garage. Those were just my experimental trees. My bananas are dead all the way to the corm, they bent in half from the cold. sigh I hope winter 2023 is better.
I think its important to recognize variability of forst tolerance within the same species. So for example, we have a Macadamia that will get leaf damage at 0 to -1 (30-32 farenheit). There avocados that will get leaf damage at those temperatures and there are avocados that get snowed on in CHile!
NOAA makes it official.
Last 8 years… Global Cooling… at a rate of 0.11C decade… despite 450 billion tons of man made emissions worth about 14% of CO2 emissions.
So we have a mini ice age or what… we definetly have been lied to no doubts now.
C02 warming hoax, they must stop. ✋
I feel your pain brother my chayote, hibiscus acetacella and olive trees got assasinated. The good news is we are learning to select plant pheno and genotypes based on performance during a cold snap. Those mangoes have some solid genetics. I’m in 9b too. How did you protect the avocado? Do the mature trees have more resistance?
Sorry for the beating your tropicals suffered, but after the damaged foliage is removed, and the pruning is done, your majestic oaks will really shine through
hopefully, I will not go through the same here in Algrve- we have all kinds of extremes- when will the locust swarms appear? Abraço.
Does anyone know what kind of potting mix Pete uses for his nursery? Thanks! Jah Bless!
One day its gonna snow there if it gets that cold.
👍My bananas are fine here in S. Florida they have fruit too.
🤔 💭.. OOH 😮 MY GOD!! PETE!! 🥶 🥶 ALL GARDEN 🪴 🌱 DESTROYED!. HOPEFULLY 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 BETTER WEATHER COMING 🔜 🔜 SOON TO FLORIDA LAND, PRAY 🙏🏻 GOD FOR BETTER WEATHER TO COME!. THE PROPHET ELIAS PRAYED SO THAT IT WOULD NOT RAIN FOR 3 1/2 YEARS; AND THE RAINS STOPPED!, AFTER PRAYING WHEN KING ACAS SENT HIM TO SEARCH 🔍 👀 THE PROPHET FOR WHOM THE RAINS HAD STOPPED, WHEN HE FOUND HIM UNTIL THEY HUMBLED THEMSELVES BEFORE THE PRESENCE OF THE PROPHET THE RAIN DID NOT RETURN TO EARTH!! ; PRAY 🙏🏻 🧎🏻HAS THE POWER TO BRING BLESSING BACK TO THE EARTH!!. PRAY FOR NICE WEATHER PETE!!, GOD WILL BE PLEASE PEOPLE WHO HUMBLE THEMSELVES BEFORE GOD IN PRAYER!!.
Florida is such a mind bend climate…
You need to move to Miami 😱 I live South 41 Naples we don’t even having that problem! We have durian , mangosteen ,santol, mamey, soursop , abiu rambutan more!
Things happen. Bananas can come back if the roots system is protect? Concidering it as a herbacious plant like grass?
How did your bananas do so well, we got down to about 20, and mine are dead to the ground, they're all fallen over
Great explanation of why and how the cold affected different plants, different ways, as well as the location.
Hopefully every thing comes back strong.
U rock man thanks so mush
