I’m squeezing in one last adventure in 2022, and this one is a Duzey. The SoCal Desert Ramble! 500 miles of beautiful mountains, desert washes, the lawless and funky Slab City, and even a ski resort. This journey will take me from San Diego, into the Anza Borrego Desert, past the Salton Sea, up to Big Bear, and down into Los Angeles. In this episode, I ride through Joshua Tree National Park for the first time in my life! Here’s the route, https://bikepacking.com/routes/socal-desert-ramble/

  1. What's your favorite National Park in the USA? Joshua Tree is up there for me, but I still think that Canyonlands is my fave.

  2. What made Pioneertown different than any other movie set is that people lived there, and still do. Don't worry, the turkey is still ther. I am a resident🤠.

  3. Taylor Van Duzer? Ryan Swift? It was good to see you meet up with more people and break out of your shyness to talk to them!……… Motion is Lotion is Right!……….. Changing things? "Changing attitudes? Be a tree….sometimes it's better to be a willow than an Oak!"………..I was concerned for you sleeping with the snakes until the gunfire!! DD

  4. Berdoo Canyon, BLM land, so you can shoot. Road was built in the 30s to the camp where the underground part of the MWD canal that takes Colorado River water to LA. Thousands of men were housed up there.

  5. G'day Ryan 🦘
Really great series, like the way your channel is heading.

  6. Thank You very much for sharing such a GREAT experience and putting a smile on my face !!!!
Looking forward to Big Bear and beyond.

  7. Ryan Van Duzer my dose of goodness in my week. You mange to encapsulate why I love bicycle touring. I have ridden lots of rides in Australia and one in Germany and Austria. Unfortunately I am now not riding much as I am home looking after my terminally ill wife. My big goal once she is gone is to ride around Europe for 3 months and reconnect with all the good people in the world. Everyone talks to cycle tourists. We are non threatening and always seem to stoke interest in the people we meet. Thanks for brightening what is a pretty sad time in my life. And give Amelia a big hug.

  8. The amount of ground you covered was amazing. It was great to see all the sights of the aread I frequent. Thanks for sharing.

  9. it's sad to see all the grafitti and trash… those shooters should be cleaning up after themselves… disgusting…

  10. That canal was probably part of the Central Arizona Project, drinking water for Phoenix, Tucson and other cities.
And a tip for Clif bars: put them in a back pocket to warm them up. Much softer that way.

  11. Really enjoying this series of videos. The day spent at the slab was a lot of fun to watch. You were right where you were supposed to be.

  12. I'm off to the Negev Desert in Israel end of next month and this video is getting me ready…..another amazing adventure Ryan.

  13. What a Blessed Day.. Connecting with Humans.. Shea solo bikepacker & Steve & his family.. Pioneer town was very Cool to see..Seeing your videos always puts a smile on my face 😀
    Ole' Ole' Ole'

  14. I multi hobby with a few friends all the time… starts off slow with fishing, then a little shooting, biking, and finish up with a dip at the lake/river and a cold beer NOTHING WRONG WITH PEOPLE OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE TARGET SHOOTING… everyone out there having their own fun… father and son, boyfriend and girlfriend having a shooting date… All just having fun…

Love bikes and HUGE 2A supporter…

  15. Your summary of Dr. Spencer’s nugget of wisdom on changing your mindset when you don’t like something was a great lesson for Zoe and Sam (and everyone else) to hear as we watched as a family. Thanks for the ride and for your endless positivity. Olé!

  16. The reason why those canals are restricted is because they are highly toxic. They contain. Industrial fertilizers and heavy metals from agricultural run off and old military test sites.

The reason why they say no loitering is that people go out to them to fish and drink at night. Throughout the years several people have gotten drunk and fallen in or attempted swimming and died (the end points of those canals will immediately kill a human, basically super high current and drops that have bars/gates to trap refuse so once someone goes in they are pinned inside the trap).

As a kid my grandpa got drunk and almost fell into one of those canals in Niland.

  17. The people out there shooting near slab city are likely personnel of the correctional facility in that area (Calipatria). It’s a maximum security (most prisons are high level in deserts like this) so practicing shooting is important to the officer that work there. They bring their families. It’s also for entertainment when their family goes to visit them. They likely aren’t rascals.

  18. Got the crashies and flaties….but still in the dark a bit of what a whammy is ??? :). Another great video….

  19. I went to Salton Sea and Pioneertown on the same day in October and still can't shake it. So great to see you experience this on a bike.

  20. Videos like this should be shown mandatory at school, everything Amazing!

  21. I have been eagerly awaiting this episode since I jumped in on the second (YouTube algorithms) I have since watched every one from the beginning and so far this was my favorite. How exciting and inspiring to meet another cyclist in the middle of nowhere! And then to top that off you run into a follower! That had to have been over the top! I have passed a few people I cycle with and doesn't it out some wind in your sails? What a good feeling! Well as mentioned earlier, I will eagerly await the next episode of this amazing adventure thru this incredible desert. Thanks so much for Sharing!

  22. Hey Ryan, I am really enjoying your recent video about Southern California, slab City. Reminds me of when I lived in the desert outside of Albuquerque. But I've got to tell you I totally agree with you on the firearm, shooting issues. I am an avid supporter of the second amendment, and I think it's everybody's god-given right to keep and bear arms. But when I go shooting I don't leave anything behind. I pick up all my shells all my brass, the only thing that I leave behind is tire tracks and footprints. I totally agree I think it is so disrespectful for, firearm enthusiasts to leave there spent shells behind. Totally not cool man. Hey watch out for the rattlesnakes out there. Pedal on my friend!!

  23. Those gunshots are quite scary I always worry about you on these trips like your mom be safe

  24. your videos are so special to me, cause once i start one of your videos the smile never leaves my face, the amount of happiness coming out from my screen is just unbelievable . i appreciate the good effort you are making ❤🚵🚵
